Wouldn't dare put this in LBN, they want it all in one thread

A new update from the Toronto Star

U.S. sanitizes stain of death

Photos of soldiers' coffins are off limits
Woman loses job after policy breach
Apr. 23, 2004. 06:21 AM

TIM HARPER
WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON—As a mother who had lost a son to a brain tumour, Tami Silicio wanted mothers who had lost sons and daughters in Iraq to know the remains of their loved ones were being treated with respect and dignity.

So she took a photo of rows of flag-draped coffins being loaded on to a cargo plane in Kuwait awaiting return to the U.S. and had a friend deliver it to her hometown newspaper, which put it on the front page.

And then she was fired.

/snip/

The company has acknowledged it fired the 50-year-old Edmonds, Wash., woman after pressure from the Pentagon.
It praised the work done by her and her husband.

"it fired the 50-year-old Edmonds, Wash., woman after pressure from the Pentagon"

Is that even LEGAL?

Up here in Canukville someone has to do something real bad in the course of their work duties, or else thy have recourse through "wrongful dismissal" laws.

Seems like a pretty outrageous action on the part of the Pentagon to just try to ruin someone's life (no, I don't believe that it's the first time they've done this sort of thing, not by a long shot)

Gawwwd, sorry to say, but the more I learn about the way the Government in the USA behaves, the more despicable I find it.

Sorry, but that's my opinion, and BTW,

this is ONE Canuk that has NO intention of crossing "that" border

ever again

(sigh)

2. Educate this Canuk here, what's a "Franken" show
.
.
.

I've seen the name mentioned here before, but was never curious enough to ask.

Obviously it's not a "big" deal up here in Northern Ontario.

Never seen/heard of it on TV or radio.

Is it "left, right, centrist" ?

3. That would be "The O'Franken Factor" on Air America Radio,
I think. Listen online (theoretically) at www.airamericaradio.com. There are days when the servers simply will not handle the traffic.

It is deliciously, satirically, gleefully leftist!

Our lives have been dramatically improved since march 31 - we finally get a voice on the air. As one add said today:
"Air America - Talk Radio you don't have to yell back at"

8. Yes. Let's Do Talk About Wrongful Termination
Yes. let's do talk about wrongful termination.

The woman who took the picture worked as a cargo handler for the Maytag Aircraft Corporation in Kuwait.

Her employer had entered into an agreement with the Department of Defense, and part of that agreement stipulated that no photographs of military caskets would be taken.

The woman took a photograph, gave it to a friend, who then sold it to an American newspaper.

My guess is that this woman would NOT prevail in a wrongful termination suit against her employer.

She violated a condition of her employment.

10. the company sympathized with her and was pressured by pentagon to fire her
I still stand that she will win in a lawsuit. Millions have won settlements for FAR LESS. We shall see, won't we?

11. Have You Got A Link?
I had understood that Maytag (the company that employed her) issued a statement saying that they supported the DoD's policy.

12. Was this in her contract?
All I've seen so far is that the employer supported the Pentagon's policy, not that it held its employees to that policy or had asked them to agree to it. Do you have proof of that? I'd like to see the facts.

9. I'm sorry to say that I feel exactly the same way...
Everyday I learn something else dispicable about this outlaw administration. It makes my stomach churn every time that I see something like this, but the part that pisses me off as much as the actions is the complacentcy of our media...the days of Pravda are back again.
