2 forays into freeper land and i have some ?'s
are they for real?

do they really organize trips to harass hillary's book signings? why?
what is the deal with the freepers and hillary in the first place?
and there is some real, honest god hate, i mean bone-marrow deep hate for progressives there. i honestly do not get that, hating someone over a difference in political philosophy. can someone share some insight? or is this just the ann coulter mindset? (which i figured which a personna to get some bucks in the bank.)
thanks.

and yes, i am legit, really. i voted for a republican. once. for mayor. he was promptly indicted about 6 months later and cut a plea bargain deal to avoid jail time. that was in 1982. it will never happen again, unless the democrat on the ballot is zell miller.

3. I'm always amazed at just how THREATENED the Hillary haters
seem to be - by her. What on earth?!?!?!?

I don't understand what it is about her that provokes such a reaction. But then again, I sense that many of these fine individuals prefer Stepford Wives like laura.

Nor do I understand why it's such deep hatred that they feel for liberals and progressives. What's to hate? What is it about our philosophy that's so desperately to hate? It's really stunning.

Then again...

I also find it hard to see why anybody could NOT hate bush. So therein lies the rub.

7. I've been fascinated by this for years...
too, and really don't understand it.

I was generally disgusted by Nixon, and pretty much despised Reagan, but never hated them with the passion these people have for the Clintons. Even Shrub, as bad as he is, I don't hate him personally, but for what he has done. Although, I admit, I do think he's as much a pantload as a person as he is a President.

I suspect that, besides the political and cultural wars, there is an attitude that Clinton was undeserving of the office. The idea is that he got in by some fluke, and was legally the President, but just didn't deserve it. By being there, he demeaned the office.

It's a visceral hatred, and absurd, but something akin to what a few people thought about Nixon. Some ridiculous notion about purity in the White House. Presidents apparently shouldn't be common politicians, but should be above human nature.

Maybe it's because we have no royalty or priestly caste that is looked to as an institution of people who are above the fray. We might long for a class of people who we may assume to be pure, and put that on the office of President. When a President doesn't live up to the ideals of personal purity we set up for them, it causes this uncontrollable passion.

At any rate, I do despise Shrub as a person, but don't seethe with hatred. I do, however, hate what he has done in office. Passionately.

The Clinton haters can't point to any particular thing he has done, but seem to seethe with a personal hatred, and that I can't really understand.

4. Their hate is years of repressed racism
boiling to the top and spilling on to us Liberals for those damn civil rights that we imposed on poor white trash America. At the core of their main political thrust is racism, sexism and classism. That's it, At least one of those three core republican principles is what every issue/policy that they have or have implemented is founded on.

5. they're for real...
they've drunk the kool-aide, and there's no turning back. what i can't figure out is:
1. why the hell do they hate hillary so much? what did she ever do to them? is it b/c she's smarting than all of them collectively, or is it b/c she's female and could still kick their asses?
2. what exactly about the clintons in general didn't they like? i stop to think every now and then, while in the midst of an especially good hate regarding the asshole in the white house, "you know, this approaches what the freepers and other knuckle-draggers on the right feel about clinton...am i really devolved to that level?"

but then i remember...oh yeah, that's right, I HAVE A REASON OR A HUNDRED TO LOATH BUSH! they are just pissed that clinton managed to foil their dreams of a 1000 year (or at least 20 year) reagan-esque reich.

was it all the money that clinton made people? was it the reduction in crime, or was it the improved relations with the rest of the world? i don't get it.

6. They are real and really pathetic
Have you ever seen a freeper rally? Two dozen losers made up of guys with bad hair pieces and women with blue hair.

The hostility and violence of the freeper threads is truly frightening, however. They really have some deep down issues they need to deal with.

Amazing. The contrast between the freedom loving, sincere, well thought out logical discussions we have a DU and the vile hateful vicious diatribes that spew from the pages of Free Republic.

:)

9. To me its an ongoing culture war.
Edited on Sat Apr-24-04 04:14 AM by narcjen
In a nutshell, between the northern and southern mindset. In a sense the civil war is on-going. The civil war came to an end formally, but the underlying differences, cultural, political and what have you, between the north and south has remained relatively unchanged. Only now we call it liberal vs. conservative instead of north vs. south.

Southern society was modeled on the feudal system of old Europe. It was an agrarian society basically consisting of a few large landowners and their masses of black and white laborers, who were largely uneducated and illiterate.

The north at the time was an urban society based on heavy industry. The rapid pace of technological modernization helped lead to a relatively rapid pace of progressive social change (ie: Abolition). Northerners had to be more educated and urban than their backward counterparts in the south to function and adapt within the rapidly changing environment of northern society.

I believe modern-day libs and cons have inherited the basic mindset of their respective northern and southern predecessors. But with a backward-thinking, illiterate now in power, its as if the South had actually won the Civil war. What the heck happened?

11. Nope. Not a north-south issue at all
Well, there are admittedly shades of that, but the stereotypes you're tossing around don't even hold up well as stereotypes. Starting with the fact that the oldest pubic universities in the US were founded in Georgia and North Carolina.

I can only hope that you're being deliberately provocative.

12. I think from a historical perspective
Edited on Sat Apr-24-04 09:22 AM by narcjen
it is a valid description of the origin of the freeper mindset. Unless you have a better explanation of where the intensely ideological, intensely ignorant freeper mentality comes from, and why it is so pervasive in this day and age, I'm sticking to it.

10. I've been monitoring that site...
...every day since the day Monica Lewinsky's name became news.

Our columnist Gene Lyons said that if you want to understand the Clinton haters, you have to see who else they hate. It's pretty clear that it's race-based, way down deep.

they really can't.

They can't handle a smart, honorable, dignified, considerate woman as a credible statesperson who isn't a pimp or a whore to a corporate god.

15. MHO is that these guys missed out on a lot of fun in their younger years
I know people who are my age and younger who, during the 60's and 70's were the good clean kids.

They did what ever their elders told them to do which was mostly, live like a fundie. The were taught to respect their elders and not to question authority. They were told that there would be some reward for living like this, when in reality they were just being made to be the image and likeness of their parents.

They looked down on the hippies and the sexual revolution which they missed out on. Us freaks were going to get punished or something for not being as straight laced as they were.

The thing that pissed them off was that being good didn't get them anything more than the rest of us got. And the rest of us didn't have anything bad happen to us.

So they gave up all the fun they could have had and it got them nothing in return. They are still pissed at "liberals and Hillary" because we represent those kids who had all the fun and nothing bad happened to us like their parents told them would happen.

That is part of it anyway.

16. hah!
yeah, i've wondered about the fun quotient bit myself.

the racism/ southern cliche mindset v northern clichet mindset is interesting, and i think that definitely has some substance to it. there's no doubt that those in power really wanna keep folks divided, and one of the best ways of doing that is race. if people ever caught on that classism, not racism, is the real enemy, things might change a bit.

thanks for the answers.
