During his remarks yesterday at Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, in Naples, Florida, President Bush said:

“Now we've been working with the state of Florida. We've been working hard because we share a common goal to conserve our environment”

However, according to a new Earth Day Report released by Florida PIRG, “Florida's environment faces a long list of challenges because of the Bush administration's environmental policies.” Specifically, the report states...

16. PNAC Wrote To Bush 9/20/2001
http://www.newamericancentury.org/Bushletter.htm

The Honorable George W. Bush
President of the United States
Washington, DC

September 20, 2001

Dear Mr. President,

We write to endorse your admirable commitment to "lead the world to victory" in the war against terrorism. We fully support your call for "a broad and sustained campaign" against the "terrorist organizations and those who harbor and support them." We agree with Secretary of State Powell that the United States must find and punish the perpetrators of the horrific attack of September 11, and we must, as he said, "go after terrorism wherever we find it in the world" and "get it by its branch and root." We agree with the Secretary of State that U.S. policy must aim not only at finding the people responsible for this incident, but must also target those "other groups out there that mean us no good" and "that have conducted attacks previously against U.S. personnel, U.S. interests and our allies."

U.S. to Reinstate Some Baathists in Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Some senior Iraqi officials sacked in a purge of those connected with Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s regime will be brought back in an overhaul of the policy, a spokesman for the U.S.-led administration said Thursday.

Dan Senor suggested the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council had gone overboard in preventing former senior members of Saddam's Baath Party from returning to work.

"We want it to be implemented in the way it was designed," Senor told a news conference.

Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator in Iraq (news - web sites), would address the nation Friday on the issue, he added.

They model their ideas after that cook Strauss. PNAC thinks they are above the rules of morality. They are nothing more than marketing with a paper thin ideology. True intellectualism comes from thinking about how you can further mankind versus American imperialism.

Stahl of ''60 Minutes'' says she regrets Iraq WMD stories

Wednesday night, the CBS news correspondent and “60 Minutes” co-editor also talked about work she’s less proud of: two pre-Iraq war reports casting doubt on Saddam Hussein’s claim to have rid Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction.

“I look on those two stories as mistakes, journalistic mistakes,” Stahl told a crowd of about 1,000 gathered in the Princess Anne High School auditorium. “I made them, and I regret it.”

Stahl described a trip to Iraq in October 2001 , where she interviewed Iraqi officials, military leaders and scientists. They told her that Saddam had no ties to Osama bin Laden, that their secular Muslim country was just as much his enemy as the United States.

Stahl said she believed that.

34. Why do they only mention the Purple Hearts?
Kerry also has a Silver and Bronze Star. I heard a lot of talk about the Purple Hearts and how one was awarded to Kerry for minor wounds but those stars are never mentioned. I don't know the policy now but in other wars it wasn't uncomon for Purple Hearts to be awarded for very minor conditions
like Athletes Foot. I'm not putting down anyones Purple Heart but it's a minor award compared to the stars.

If you personally witnessed George W. Bush reporting for drills at Dannelly Air National Guard Base between the months of May and November of 1972 we want to hear about it. Help Mr. Bush put this partisan assault on his character behind him, so he can focus on more serious issues like jobs, the deficit and the coming civil war in Iraq. Just contact us below with the salient details. If we think you're a possible winner, we'll get back to you pronto. Good luck to all contestants!

Force Cannot Calm Iraq Flashpoints - UN Envoy

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - With U.S. troops threatening Sunni insurgents in Falluja and Shi'ite rebels in Najaf, a U.N. envoy said force could not solve Iraq's problems.

"I think that there is always a better solution than shooting your way into anywhere," Lakhdar Brahimi said of the standoffs in Iraq's flashpoint cities.

A few families who had fled fierce fighting in Falluja earlier this month walked back into the battle-scarred city on Saturday, hours after Iraq's U.S. administrator warned that "major hostilities could resume at short notice."

36. Teacher Arrested at Airport, Weapons Charges
At New York's Kennedy airport today, an individual later discovered to be a public school teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a setsquare, a slide rule, and a calculator. At a morning press conference, Attorney general John Ashcroft said he believes the man is a member of the notorious al-gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

"Al-gebra is a fearsome cult," Ashcroft said. "They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of absolute value. They use secret code names like 'x' and 'y' and refer to themselves as 'unknowns', but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, 'there are 3 sides to every triangle'."

When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, he would have given us more fingers and toes."

38. Guy! did you hear about this slap at Bush from Nightline ???
Ted's closing thought tonight was a beautiful, particularly strong uppercut to Bush's cowardly chin....

"There is nothing inherently wrong with showing the American public pictures of our war dead coming home. It's the context... HOW those pictures are used... that's important.

"Sometimes, even the people who make the rules miss the point.

"There's certainly nothing wrong, for example, about showing the picture of a dead, New York fireman being carried up from Ground Zero on a flag-draped stretcher... unless, of course, you put that picture... in a political campaign ad."

(...silence... as that scene from the ad is played, followed by the endorsement, spoken by *: "I'm George W Bush, and I approve this message.")

41. Bush's lobotomy has been a tremendous success.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,3604,1194707,00.html

"Without the lobotomy," Mr Cheney told the American Academy of Neurology, "it might have proved difficult to persuade the president to start wars all around the world without any good pretext. But the removal of those parts of the brain associated with understanding the outcome of one's actions has enabled the president to function fully and without hesitation. Even when it is clear that disaster is around the corner, as it is currently in Iraq, the chief executive is able to go on TV and announce that everything is on course and that he has no intention of changing tactics that have already proved disastrous.

Similarly, Donald Rumsfeld regards the surgery as an unqualified success. He writes in this month's American Medical Association Journal: "The president's prefrontal leucotomy has successfully removed all neural reflexes resistant to war-profiteering. It is a tribute to the medical team who undertook this delicate operation that, no matter how close the connection between those instigating military action and the companies who benefit from it, the president is able to carry on as if he were morally in the right."

62. I'm good.
I did a couple hours in the hills on the mare...a mature 15 years old, she went 8 miles climbing up and down mountains with my not inconsiderable bulk attached, and hardly broke a sweat. Still dancing and ready to go when I got back. Raid the dog followed us the whole way; we stop at springs and a pond for her to drink. The last stop on the way back, she was sitting in the green, algae-filled pond water, up to her neck in green water and her belly in black mud. She sits there and drinks, and cools down. So I got to clean her up when we get back. Then I did another hour with the filly, who is officially no longer a baby; she turned 3 yesterday. I'll probably start riding her late summer.

I've called several times, but I really only have one issue that I am informed enough to speak on, and you only want to hear me talk about public ed so many times. I've also called a few times to plug Dennis, before Guy's endorsement. These days, I'm lucky to get home in time to hear some of the show on a Saturday. I could talk about the local recruiters and their high-pressure tactics in our local high schools....I'm waiting for a friend to drop something off. If there is time after she's gone, I'll give a call. Once when I was talking to Guy and Michael, Rain started barking hysterically because someone approached the door, and we had to cut the call short with Guy saying something like, "Is that a yellow dog I hear?" LOL.

meetings....

The suggestion was that one reason Cheney is fighting the release of transcripts is that in those meetings with energy executives, he showed maps of Iraqi oil fields. It was a suggestion, but think about it. Weren't the records of electric co meetings and natural gas company meetings made public, but those of the petroleum industry are protected? Were just maps of oil fields shown -- or was the battle plan also disclosed just like it was to Prince Bandar?

If history is any guide, overt funding from Washington will turn out to be the tip of the iceberg. This was the case in Haiti, Nicaragua, Chile, and other countries where Washington has sought "regime change" because our leaders didn't agree with the voters' choice at the polls. (In fact, Washington is currently aiding efforts to oust President Aristide in Haiti -- for the second time). In these episodes, which extended into the 1990s, our government concealed amounts up to the hundreds of millions of dollars that paid for such things as death squads, strikes, economic destabilization, electoral campaigns and media.

All this remains to be investigated in this case. But the intentions of the U.S. government are clear. Last week the State Department ordered non- essential embassy personnel to leave the country, and warned American citizens not to travel here. But there have not been attacks on American citizens or companies here, from either side of the political divide, and this is not a particularly dangerous place for Americans to be.

In this situation, the State Department's extreme measures and warning can only be interpreted as a threat. The Bush Administration has also openly sided with the opposition, demanding early elections here. Then this week Washington changed its position to demanding a referendum on Chavez's presidency, most likely figuring that a divided opposition could easily lose to Chavez in an election, despite its overwhelming advantage in controlling the major means of communication.

48. Charlie Reese Quote
It is absurd to suppose that a human being sitting around suddenly stands up and says: "You know, I hate freedom. I think I'll go blow myself up."

50. Another great quote from Charlie's column today
"The basic flaw in the neoconservative ideology is that democracy cannot be imposed on other people at the point of a gun."

71. Will do...
on the way. Although I don't know if this is a really wise move; as a lifelong bibliophile, I never have enough shelves for the books I've already got; I just packed up 25 boxes to clear some space in my office two weeks ago, and have somehow aquired another 2 feet of books since then.

73. I can relate!
We have one wall of the basement full of books. And five bookcases upstairs... And stacks of books everywhere!

You can never have too many books or too many cats.

77. Now that is the truth.
I have, if you count my house, my office, and my shed out back, about 4,000 books of my own. That's a conservative estimate. I'm always "weeding," and giving away, but more books just keep attracting my attention. And two cats. I keep thinking I need a bigger place; not for me, but for the books & cats.
