NYC: Bloomberg now wants to shut bars and clubs earlier???

To NYC Duers. Is this true???

I noticed the discussion of this on a couple of websites but had yet to see it on the websites of New York's media outlets. What on earth is next? First he bans smoking from the bars and clubs and now he wants to shut them down early? What gives?

I am resigned to the fact that smoking in bars is fast becoming a thing of the past. In my state, the Tacoma-Pierce County area have banned smoking and a ban statewide is an inevitable fact. Though I do not smoke, I still find the bans ridiculous and unecessary. People are quitting anyway and my opinion is the market should decide this. Now the absurdity is growing as it would seem that the powers that be now want to close bars and nightclubs early. I know Atlanta has done it and now Buffalo is considering it as well. If this carries on, we'll be seeing such places close earlier nationwide. I suppose we'll have a bedtime law enforced before you know it. Get to bed and lights out by 11 PM or you'll be fined.

I tell you this world has been taken over by killjoys. I had a feeling that they would start closing bars earlier after the smoking ban. I wonder if something like this is going to happen in California? In fact, I am surpised that it hasn't yet. Give the politicans an inch, they will grab a foot.

to make sure you're tucked in, and not with someone they didn't approve ahead of ahead of time. Bar curfew in NYC? Sounds like a great way to get a Dem elected mayor.

As for smoking bans, as someone who is allergic, I appreciate having bans in restaurants, but I usually didn't mind too much if the bar had smokers. If I'm far enough away, I can tolerate it for a couple of hours.

BTW, a new study finds a correlation between lower rates of cardiac arrest for nonsmokers due to less second-hand exposure, but further studies are needed before conclusions are drawn. They stumbled onto this after reviewing emergency records for several cities that had enacted smoking bans in certain public places. I heard this on NPR, vs reading it, so I may not have all the details exactly right.

6. public smoking is not a simple issue

Being from Portland, OR I love the fact that smoking is banned in all public places except I hate the fact that bars are exempt. It is so refreshing to go to a bar in Boston or New York or California and experience a smoke free evening. I almost never go out in Portland for any length of time because if I do I spend the entire next day hacking.

Should people be free to bring their boom boxes into bars and blast whatever music they choose? Should people be free to bring their dogs and cats into bars and let them roam free? There's all sorts of behavioral restrictions that serve the common good.

segregated smoking and non-smoking sections . . . makes a whole lot more sense to me than an outright ban . . . I live in NY near the Jersey border, and all of the restaurants and bars in the area are in danger of going under because smokers just hop across the line to go out . . .

I'll never forget perusing the Freeper boards the night he was elected. They were absolutely ecstatic. What he's doing, though, is just a continuation of Rudy's regime – remember Rudy's decency panel: Curtis Sliwa and Raoul Felder (his divorce lawyer)? These individuals were to choose which works of art were decent enough to be shown in museums.
