Alabama Baptist Minister: Bush, War And Jesus.
As president, George W. Bush commands the armed forces of the United States. His title in this function is commander-in-chief.

As a Christian, Bush says he takes his faith in Jesus seriously. However, the office of president does not confer any special status to believers. In other words, Bush is not "theologian and chief," although it appears that may not be entirely clear to him.

The first sign came during the president's recent news conference when he said he would have gone to war with Iraq even if he had known the nation did not have weapons of mass destruction. This represents a significant departure from the traditional Christian stance toward war.

*snip*

But even as we sadly admit the occasional necessity of war, what we cannot do is cloak our wars in the trappings of God's purpose and claim divine sanction for our violence against each other.

1. "Jesus favored peace, not war"
Edited on Sat Apr-24-04 08:18 PM by bloom
It's funny how many people don't seem to get that.

<snip>

"The president appears to believe that because of Sept. 11 we are now operating under a modified Christian morality. Apparently this new morality allows us to strike at those who may become a threat."

<snip>

Nice to see a Baptist minister speaking out about it.

3. Peace I say unto you and my peace I give you
not at exactly a preemptive war theology is it? Love, forgiveness, kindness justice and peace he taught-not really consistent with the Bush doctrine

2. Plenty of good Baptists out there
who aren't fire-breathing wackos. The last two Democratic Presidents come to mind. The konservative fundies in their ranks need to be sent packing.

Yes .....do look into the teachings of Christ.

See what decisions we should take as humanity.

7. I still don't understand why
there aren't more Christians who abstain from war. My dad's a minister and we've discussed this. Jesus was a peaceful man -- why is it that Amish people and members of other sects are the only ones who refuse to go to war? Most people in America identify themselves as Christians. Every time I see something about a conscientious objector, I ask myself "Why aren't there more?"

James Evans has written editorials critical of this war. My mom calls and reads him to me over the phone. He seems very wise.
