BBV: Trusted Computing/DMCA vs. Diebold Pentagon Paper
Round two!

<0>The Importance of writes "Diebold's ill-fated e-voting machines have
gotten a lot of <1>coverage <2>recently. Of particular interest is the
fact that some of the most damning documents are legal memos leaked from
Diebold's law firm, Jones Day. The memos were <3>leaked to the Oakland
Tribune. Now Diebold's lawyers are trying to suppress their publication.
The judge has <4>ordered the documents returned, except for those
<5>already published on the internet. Hopefully, the First Amendment will <6>protect the newspaper's rights to hold onto the documents. However, EFF's Jason Schultz <7>points out a very real and very scary scenario in which trusted computing combined with the DMCA makes such leaks illegal, regardless of the First Amendment."

14. each number precedes a legal argument or potential case reference,
if I understand the pattern correctly.

I'm not a lawyer. That should be obvious....

2. Usually /. posts that get into politics are down-rated. Not here and now
BBV issues have been percolating among the computerphiles for some time now, and the discussion has moved from "whether" this is a problem to talk about the consequences of the (known) problem. Pointing out the political significance of these "design flaws" for democracy and the general good is no longer a fringe issue, it is the core of the discussion there.

3. Oh $hit.
Pat, this ain't good; I think we both know why.

If it were me, I'd urge the newspaper to make the judge's ruling moot by posting the other info online. Trump the ruling and call out the fscking dogs. Make it as big a story as possible, and screw the legal consequences. This is our vote at stake.

How much more important must it be?

5. Spread 'em if you got 'em!
If ya' know whut I means!

Round 2 folks, get ALL of those documents into the hands of as many press entities as you can A.S.A.P.! Burn as many copies as you can and spread them to the winds. DO NOT PUBLISH ANY URLs WHERE THE DOCUMENTS ARE MIRRORED! SEND INFO BY PM OR E-MAIL ONLY! THEY ARE WATCHING!

(That reminds me, how's that ulcer coming Bob?)

Strange how this Administration will immediately jump on investigating the leaking of photos of coffins or the display of a breast on TV but the outing of a long term NOC and losing years of undercover work actually tracking nuclear materials transfers to terrorists requires months to get an investigation started.

A whistle blower hands over evidence of criminal activity concerning our elections and a judge immediately tries to outlaw whistling.

4. You do know...
C. Other 1. Monitor selected Web sites to gain key intelligence.

I've always enjoyed the DU Lounge! All sorts of things go on there.

Wouldn't that be a great job to "monitor" it? Not to "moderate" it for that is a difficult and dirty job, but simply to "monitor" it, maybe do an occasional cut and paste of a funny cat picture, and write a quick note like: "He likes cats" to justify your paycheck.

Remember that Dilbert comic where Wally almost got the job of "downloading large image files from the busiest servers on the internet?" Can you imagine getting paid to read some of the "intelligence" here at DU? Other "selected Web sites" would be even better than that, wouldn't they?

edit: Insomnia? I have had a hunch on something today and can't quite forget about it.

11. I found some work today disinfecting a computer that had the NetSkyP
worm on it. Over 8000 files had to be removed! I'm trying to get the last few states done on your page. Then I have to test them all tomorrow morning. Sorry for the delay but at least I can pay one of my bills. :)

Time for bed now, I'm beat!

24. The DMCA is THAT powerful, that it can supersede the Constitution?
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 04:44 PM by HypnoToad
Those who supported it can all spontaneously combust and burn in hell for all eternity.

The DMCA was never about going after a bunch of harmless music file swappers. It was/is meant to be a stepping stone to change America into a fascist state.

This Diebold debacle is but one incident that damningly proves this.

(file swappers are a target of course, but some corporations, *cough* LEXMARK *cough* HP *cough* (many others) use the DMCA to create frivolous lawsuits out of their wazoo, using the DMCA as a convenient crutch to further their lust for money.)

http://www.stoppoliceware.org/ is the latest example. The TCPA and the "Fritz chip" were big in 2002, now forgotten, which means they'll be implemented soon...

1 Timothy 6:10.

In other words, we're boned.

Thanks to all the repukes and repuke-enablers who put the DMCA into being. x(
