Tom DeLay to be indicted!
Oh, this is sweet:

http://www.townhall.com/columnists/robertnovak/rn20040424.shtml

The word spread through Republican circles on Capitol Hill is that a runaway Democratic prosecutor in Texas may indict House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, creating upheaval in the GOP leadership.

DeLay is a Republican hero for orchestrating the off-year congressional redistricting that promises to produce six additional House seats for his party. However, District Attorney Ronnie Earle in Austin may bring an indictment against DeLay for alleged illegal cash payments in connection with the redistricting fight. That would force DeLay to step aside as majority leader at least temporarily.

DeLay predicts there will be no indictment, but concedes the old saw that a grand jury would indict a ham sandwich if the prosecutor so desires. Earle indicted Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in 1993 on trumped-up charges, but he dropped the case after the trial judge's ruling indicated that, in effect, there was no case.

Listen to poor Bobby Novak pout and fume! :)

1. here is Molly Ivin's take-- great read
<snip> AUSTIN, Texas -- You may be wondering why House Majority Leader Tom DeLay is raising money for a legal defense fund and telling his fellow Republicans in Washington to be prepared to name his replacement in the event he is indicted. DeLay and Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick may have achieved the near-impossible by breaking Texas campaign finance laws. Since Texas essentially has no campaign finance laws, this is no mean feat. <snip>

9. These two paragraphs alone SHOULD be enough to plaster DeLay and
Craddick, the Republican majority in the Ledgislature, and the PACs involved. Let's just hope it does.

Lilly met with a vice president of Compass Bank, who agreed to donate "22K direct" from the bank's PAC to each of the Republicans in the highly contested districts. Next to the contribution is the handwritten note of what Compass wanted in return. "Wants to clean up home equity lending."

They cleaned it up, all right. In the following session, the Lege voted for a constitutional amendment that allows home equity loans on lines of credit, a sort of credit card against the value of your home equity, which allows banks to charge even more than they do on lump-sum home equity loans. When the amendment passed, a Compass Bank spokesman said proudly, "We were first to the market with this."

16. That would be so sweet
Tom Craddick is from Midland Texas and the folks here believe this is one big witch hunt to try and destroy Craddick and DeLay careers by those old meanies from the democratic party.

7. Earle seems like a Republican; coercing confessions, etc.
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 11:08 AM by alcuno
I don't see why Senor Toupee Delay would have a problem with him. They're two peas in a pod.

On Edit: Can someone tell the Tom Delay "I would have gone to Vietnam but the blacks took all the slots" story for me one more time. Pretty please?

8. Much of what is on that website points more to the police...
methods than to Earle directly. While I agree that some of these things should not have been admitted, I also realize that the thugs would have crucified him as being 'soft on crime', had he not pursued them. Hobson's choice...

10. Earle is definitely all politics
But that's what makes him just the right person to get into these free-for-alls. He's been dodging blows from left and right his entire career as prosecutor, yet he's still standing. DeLay has met his match. Wait, he's met more than his match--DeLay doesn't know anything about jabbing with his left.

14. Here's a link with ties to Kansas
Representatives Tom DeLay (R- Texas), Billy Tauzin (R-La.) and Joe Barton (R- Texas) are implicated in a bribery scandal involving a corrupt Kansas electric utility, Westar Energy. The basic facts are not in dispute and, sadly, the story reads like routine Washington: wealthy special interests (Westar and its executives) contribute lots of money to key politicians (DeLay, Tauzin and Barton) in exchange for special legislative favors.

http://www.tompaine.com/feature2.cfm/ID/8132

David Wittig former CEO of Westar has already been convicted of a bank scam in Arizona or New Mexico. He's also up on Federal charges on trying to loot Westar Energy and pass all costs on to ratepayers. Yeah...he's a real piece of work...

I love it! Paybacks are a bitch. I hope he gets slammed. Then again, he will probably get away with it thanks to his Bushco pals.
