Poll question: Helmet, on or off? (BD... recovers from war injury...)
In the toon Doonesbury, will BD remain hatless, or will the 25 year long tradition of BD wearing hats continue?

1. Did you hear Garry Trudeau on "This Week"?
During the "Voices" segment, he described how seeing that flash of B.D.'s hair is nearly as shocking as seeing the extent of his injury.

He said that no matter how you might feel about the war, we simply cannot afford to keep turning away from what's really happening there. This is what motivated him to do this to B.D. He says he will continue to draw and write about the war and its human effect, and that he imagines he'll get it wrong from time to time, and that he hopes we let him know when he does.

It was an excellent segment, for Doonesbury fans and anti-war activists alike.

4. Here you go - Trudeau's comments
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/ThisWeek/Politics/thelist040425.html

I think I did a decent job of paraphrasing earlier. :-) The comments were in voiceover, while the camera panned over the B.D. strips.

Garry Trudeau, cartoonist: "What I mean to convey is that BD's life has been irrevocably changed — that another chapter has begun. He's now on an arduous journey of recovery and rehabilitation. What I'm hoping to describe are the coping strategies that get people through this. There is no culture of complaint among the wounded. Most feel grateful to be alive and respectful of those who have endured even worse fates. But for many, a kind of black humor is indispensable in fending off bitterness and despair, so that's what will animate the strips that follow. I have to approach this with humility and care.

I'm sure I won't always get it right, and people will let me know when I don't. But it seems worth doing. This month alone, we've sustained nearly 600 wounded in action. Whether you think we should be in Iraq or not, we can't tune it out. We have to remain mindful of the terrible losses that individual soldiers are suffering in our name."

13. That's the idea, I think. His shield against reality is now gone...
...the one he's worn in some form since high school.

Along with his leg, I think we're going to see that he has lost a lot of illusions too.
