What country would you most tolerate invading the United States?
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 11:59 AM by Onlooker
If you had to choose a country to successfully invade the United States, which country would you choose? I would choose France or Spain.

What country do you think a Freeper would choose? Maybe Bermuda?

1. Oh, I've always liked Canada.
If we have to be invaded and taken over, I think Canada would be a good country to do it. ;)

25. Yup, Canada
They're based on similar ideology to what ours used to be. Along with Mexico, they're most in danger from our reckless actions and would have the most justification.

15. No,
I was just reading an article that quoted some Vietnamese General. He said something like, It's a fundamental fact that no country will stand for being occupied by a foreign power. That makes a lot of sense. I don't think there are any good choices, and it's certainly not a fantasy, but it's still intersting, I think.

21. The Dutch are not as tolerant as you may think.
I'm a Canadian who was born in the Netherlands and still visit there on are regular basis. Rather then tolerant, I would say the Dutch tend to be indifferent when it comes to many issues.

Recently, there has been a tend where the Dutch have become much less tolerant.

As for the question, I know it's a joke, but try not to loose credibility on this forum. The American people are smart enough to sort out their own problems. Let the right destroy itself. They're doing a good job of it as it is. Unfortunately other countries' peoples are also being dragged into the mess they've created.

Just make sure you oust GWB in November. Good luck!

It is a goofy question. But it does bring up a valid point -- that even for a bunch of liberals, allowing an invasion is a totally unacceptable idea.

107. true;
i live there all the time.
There used to be this thing called "Hollanditis": a notirious inclination to speak out on any international matter that was percieved by the Dutch to somehow be wrong. It was done with the best intentions, and supposedly it was a typical Dutch thing. But that is no more. If anything the Dutch have indeed become indifferent to anything that doesn't directly affect their daily lives. These days it's uncool to worry about what goes on in the world.

This sort of thing only hurts GWB's oponents.

Just like Iraq should have sorted out its own problems, the USA needs to sort out its own mess.

I love America, but extremism on both the left and right is killing you guys. The partisan division in your country is not healthy. I hope you guys can sort yourselves out soon.

22. I Like This Question, Onlooker,
As a thought experiment, role reversal is always revealing. I would vote for the Candians, too. Freepers probably cannot bear to even address this question.

Yet so many people in this country still expect the Iraqis (or whoever it is at the moment) to be happy over a foreign occupation, as long as it comes from the US.

62. Yes, But That Isn't the Question
The fact that the US cannot be successfully invaded makes many Americans indifferent to the question of what it would be like to actually live in a country under occupation.

Historically, Americans are a very callous people. No group, from the Arawaks to the Vietnamese, get much sympathy, even in retrospect. Occasionally, a mental exercise like this will put things in perspective. Typically, though, it's dismissed without even being tried. More of the same.

46. If the US were invaded we would be doing the same thing the Iraqis
are doing - fighting off the invaders.

Maybe we should let the Lummi Nation run our government.

The actions of the Lummi tribe provide a model for the involvement of indigenous peoples in the planning and management of our existing natural resources. By actively taking part in both local and international efforts, the Lummi are forcing the current industrialized society to listen to and account for traditional values and management methods with regards to natural resources. Sound policy changes are needed that discount present actions according to their impact on future generations, and often indigenous peoples are the true experts on such policy due to their understanding of generational time. To the Lummi, overfishing is not an option because it won't last into the future and if fishing is gone, their identity and culture will disappear.

47. There is no single nation that has the military strength to carry this out
I think more realistically, we might see groups of nations pooling their resources together to fight the US hegemony. Canada lacks military strength, lacks knowhow, and more importantly lacks motivation AT THIS POINT IN TIME.

However, should we see the continuation of bassackwards US foreign policy, we might see more foreign nations work together to defang US global domination. Direct invasion? Highly doubtful. A more prudent course of action would be to attack the US economy through high energy prices, devaluing US currency, and trade restrictions against the US.

The US is vulnerable in my opinion. Militarily no, but economically - absolutely. Economics led to the downfall of the USSR. Low oil prices sped up the demise of that superpower, and the US is getting dangerously overextended. They are alienating allies at hyperspeed.

I strongly beleive that is why we see such beligerance from the Bush administration. Vulnerability from economic attack. It is why Iraq is so central to their interest.

So, they had their chances and mostly blew it. I don't know whether I want someone who's National Anthem is easier to sing or whose language is easy to learn or who has good tasting cooking or has beautiful women.

Hmmmm...

I think Switzerland deserves a shot at it. Good cooking, pluralistic languages, wonderful people, fiscal responsibility, excellent ecological practices, and they know how to deal with snow better than Americans.

My other choice would be Tahiti, of course. (It's not just about the women.:P)

It may be light-hearted but is also flame-bait and freeper-bait.

75. Uh...
Probably Mexico, because their army has consistently been ranked among the crappiest in the world. Resistance (if it were actually needed) would be much easier.

Also because I speak some Spanish, I could infiltrate the enemy and collect intel.

Of course we would have to secede from the union first. Then we could invade the USA and rescue all of you from the facists that have taken over Washington.

95. Sorry to answer a question with a question, but WHY would anyone
.
.
.

Why would anyone WANT to invade the USA?

I'm sure the whole world would be quite happy if the US just took their military home, and their fingers out of everyone else's pocketbooks.

I wouldn't mind being able to drive down to the California beaches without fear of the Patriot Act imprisoning me for some unknown reason, but other than that -

USA is running out of water, hydro and oil. Their air is getting polluted, and their many bases are polluted and leaking toxins into rivers and groundwaters.

Look at all the trouble the world's "superpower" is having invading a weenie country of just 20 million.

Who wants to mess with 300 million?

Nah, Murikka is it's own worst enemy.

Only an very misguided group would think of invading Murikka.

If the US succeeds in dominating the world, it will probably turn on itself just out of habit!

Heck, it's gotta be at war with SOMEBODY!

Just a Canuk's wandering thoughts.

110. My thought also...
Why would anyone WANT to invade the USA?

I can't see that we have anything that anyone else wants. If this country would simply stay out of the affairs of other nations, it would be sufficient.

106. Hmmm...
Based on military ability, I think only the UK "could" do it. But even if we had full (and I mean full) mobilization, you'd still outnumber us 10:1.

So it might have to be a joint Europe operation. But the French would probably pull out, the Germans would only get as far as the beaches and then stop, the Italians would probably settle for the East Coast and set up more rackets, the Spaniards would probably be given Alaska to deal with, and Estonia would probably do the best of all.

So it's not the Europeans. How about Russia? Hell no. Their troops would be busy getting themselves jobs as taxi drivers for better pay. But I would LOVE to see them do a Wildcats...

How about the Japanese? Too few. Chinese...now there's a thought.

Yeah, I plump for a Anglo-Chinese Alliance, with Africa supplying the ammo and explosives and occasional manpower, India with yet more manpower and North Korea the nuke threat.

IMHO The USA will never be invaded successfully for the same reason as Russia. It's too damn big, there are too many Americans and most of them have access to guns.

113. It's already happening....
America IS being invaded....Saudi's own like 30% of Citibank....China is going to own our manufacturing.....and with India other high tech industries...

The technology gap is not widening between us and other industrialized nations...and once other countries catch up, especially in pharmacuticals and agriculture, our primary business will be defense.

The other factor to consider is given time our control over oil is going to slip too....giving us less of an advantage in terms of maintaining our standard of living.

So....America of the future will be corporate office mega complexes of various foreign interests, with the rest of the landscape becoming more and more like a 3rd world nation.
