Jerry Springer stumping for *Bush? |
|
I have caught the end of Springer for the last several nights while waiting for the late movie to come on. Somewhere near the end of every show, there is always a comment from one of the freepers on stage about what a great job *Bush is doing. Then the crowd busts out chanting USA! USA! USA! as an American flag graphic fades in.
I always thought his guests were all freepers, now it is confirmed.

I personally can't think of a better illustration.

I wonder what the christian fundamentalists would think about that?
On a tangent... have you noticed how the far right is marginalizing itself? "NASCAR Fans are Bush Fans" (I know that isn't 100% accurate, but it's the picture they try to convey), the far right religious are for Bush, now Jerry Springer guests and audience members are for Bush. Amazing. Are they trying to corner the southern redneck market?
Don't get me wrong - I live in the south and am married to a redneck who is a staunch Democrat so I know that the "stereotyping" is bogus. But it almost appears that they marginalize THEMSELVES. Odd.

4. Wasn't Springer mulling a Senate run as a Dem? |
|
He had considered running for the Senate from OH as a Democrat, but bailed.
Are you sure he's not trying to make a subtle point by relating the mentality/emotional immaturity of his guests to knee-jerk patriotism and/or support of the Bush administration?

8. The chanting of USA! USA! USA! on Springer is obvious parody |
|
Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 05:21 AM by markses
Sometimes the joke is on the audience, sometimes they're in on it. For example, a guest will say something like "Only in America could a poor boy like me have sex with a whole midget family!" and the audience will break into USA!USA!USA! But that audience response is usually conditioned by some cue from the guy who directs and whips up the audience. It seems clear that Jerry is making fun of the easy fall into patriotism, even where that fall is inappropriate or trivializing. Springer thinks his own show is stupid, so what does that make the flag+chanting combo at its conclusion? Inappropriate and trivializing. That's Springer's point, it seems to me. Now, some would further argue that his audience is made up of fools so this parody effect is lost. I don't think so. I think plenty of so-called "politically informed" democrats and liberals who people these boards simply don't know what "working-class" and "lower-class" resistance looks like, so they assume that anything that doesn't look like bourgeois liberal resistance to be null and void, foolish, or stupid. I think the parody, or the deep irony with which USA!USA!USA! erupts is not lost on the audience, and that they particpate in that irony.

I kind of thought he might be doing that to make fun of them, but wasn't sure since I really haven't watched the show. Making a public spectacle out of piss ignorant freepers. It doesn't get any better than that!

I am going to have to catch a little more of it now.The show never really appealed to me because it was like having some of my in-laws over for a visit.
The funniest thing I have seen was last night. This woman had apparently been sleeping with her husband's brother and was going to wind up on the street. When asked what she was going to do to support herself, her answer was "with *GW doing such a good job with the economy,I will be able to get a good job that pays great."
The night before,an almost identical response from a person in a "gay lover spat" Log Cabin Republican?
