Depleted Uranium: The Toxic Killer

-snip-

• “When I spoke out within the military about how bad was, my life ended, my career ended. I received threats, warnings, sent to the reserve from full active duty."-- Dr. Doug Rokke, former Army Major, who was in charge of the military's environmental clean-up following the first Gulf War, ABC News, 5/5/03 (Thirty members of Rokke’s cleanup team have already died, and he has 5,000 times the acceptable level of radiation in his body, resulting in damage to his lungs and kidneys, brain lesions, skin pustules, chronic fatigue, continual wheezing and painful fibromyalgia. After the Gulf War, Rokke was assigned to make a training video to teach soldiers how to handle depleted uranium. It was a never shown to the troops.)

• “Our studies indicate that more than forty percent of the population around Basra will get cancer. We are living through another Hiroshima”-- Dr. Jawad Al-Ali, an oncologist and member England's Royal Society of Physicians, quoted by islamonline.net, 5/15/03

• “The leukemia rate in Sarajevo, pummeled by American bombs in 1996, has tripled in the last five years. But it's not just the Serbs who are ill and dying. NATO and UN peacekeepers in the region are also coming down with cancer.”-- Baltimore Chronicle, 12/5/01

• “Drought-stricken Afghanistan's underground water supply is now contaminated by these nuclear weapons. Experts with the Uranium Medical Research Center report that urine samples of Afghanis show the highest level of uranium ever recorded in a civilian population.”-- Amy Worthington, Idaho Observer, April 2003

-snip-

• ”By now, half of all the 697,000 U.S. soldiers involved in the 1991 war have reported serious illnesses. According to the American Gulf War Veterans Association, more than 30 percent of these soldiers are chronically ill and are receiving disability benefits from the Veterans Administration.”-- Sara Flounders and John Catalinotto, Swans Commentary, 2/2/04

• “Gulf War Syndrome not only killed, maimed, and made soldiers sick, they brought it home. In a study of 251 Gulf War veterans' families in Mississippi, 67 percent of their children were born without eyes, ears or a brain, had fused fingers, blood infections, respiratory problems or thyroid and other organ malformations.”-- Leuren Moret, environmental geologist, San Francisco Bay View, 11/7/01

1. I wrote about my friend whose daughter was born with a horrible
Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 11:40 AM by SoCalDem
deformity..Goldenhars Syndrome.

Her Daddy was in GW1.. They have incurred monumental medical expenses and heartaches to last a lifetime.. The poor little thing has had her non-functioning, tumor-riddled eye removed..she has no eyelid or ear on the left side, and has internal deformities as well.. Their other children were fine.. This was "the last" baby that they longed for, and prayed that it would be a little sister to their two older sons.. At this point, they are not even sure that her remaining eye will give her adequate vision, and the internal problems are not even correctable by surgery..

Their doctor steered them to websites that lay out the DU dangers, but told them that there would never be am actual link made by the government, so not to even try to "go that route".. Basically, he was telling them, that if they wanted anymore children, they should try artificial insemination..Michael is "damaged".. and their whole family is devastated..forever..

http://www.wa-eyemd.org/Goldenhar's%20syndrome.htm

Bilateral epibulbar benign tumors are seen as whitish lumps on the edge of the corneas .

Goldenhar's syndrome is a sporadic, non-hereditary syndrome detected in infancy. Goldenhar's syndrome is a triad of anomalies including ocular epibulbar dermoids , anomalies of the ear, and vertebral anomalies .

Auricular anomalies include external ear tags and aural fistulae . Cosmetic surgery is often performed in early childhood to correct the external ear deformities.

Vertebral skeletal anomalies may include kypho-scoliosis and defects of the cervical spine. Facial asymmetry is often present. Unilateral facial involvement is more common (70-80%) with hemifacial microsomia ( a small jaw on one side ).

Ocular involvement may include upper eyelid colobomas ( a congenital defect where a portion of the eyelid is missing ) . The eyelid deformities may be corrected by cosmetic eyelid surgery in early childhood. Duane syndrome may be associated with Goldenhar's syndrome. (Refer to the Web page on Duane syndrome.)

Epibulbar dermoids are benign fibrous tumors found on the edge of the cornea . The main concern about epibulbar dermoids is development of corneal astigmatism which may lead to amblyopia, i.e. lazy eye syndrome . Epibulbar dermoids are sometimes remove for cosmetic reasons

5. So Sad- A friend of mine/office mate had a saddening experience also
Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 11:52 AM by AZCat
Her baby boy was born with multiple defects and never made it out of the hospital. It was an agonizing experience for her and her husband (their first child) and I don't think they will ever try again (adoption or other).

It hurt so bad watching another person suffer through eight months of agony (how long Joshua lived) that I can't imagine how bad it must have been for them.

How can we, as a 'civilized' people, condemn ANYONE to this kind of torture? And then cover up any links/accountability?

2. I 1st heard abt DU from Malloy when he was still at WLS
As I remember, he interviewed this doctor on his show.

I asked my brother (VN and reserves) about this; he knew about it.

Did all military know about this?

DU makes ammo harder so it penetrates better, is this right? That's why it's used, right?

There was some statement that there was a plan to use metal with DU to make kitchen appliances (harder, longer lasting). Anyone here ever hear that????

Malloy also said DU was extensively used in the bombing of Serbia; this was one of many reasons he was vehemently opposed to that action. There were lots of loud discussions with his listeners over his stance, since most disagreed with him.

4. This really tears me up
Did people learn NOTHING from Vietnam? Remember agent orange?

Democrats better start talking about ending the use of this stuff NOW. Continuing the silence is only reinforcing Nader's 'no difference' meme.

7. Most of the ones affected will be the young "short-timers"
the ones who get out of the military as soon as they can.. When they marry and start having kids, they will have been long gone from the military..

It's like the cost analysis of lawsuits vs the cost of installing seat belts.. the manufacturers knew that people would die, but it was cheaper to pay damages after lengthy lawsuits..(lots of people gave up and settled for peanuts)..

U.S. NUCLEAR POLICY AND DEPLETED URANIUM

TESTIMONY AT THE JUNE 28, 2003, PUBLIC HEARING FOR

THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL TRIBUNAL FOR WAR CRIMES IN AFGHANISTAN

CHIBA, CHIBA PREFECTURE, JAPAN

"After working on the cleanup and disposal of high level nuclear waste, I became a whistleblower in 1991 at the the Lawrence Livermore Lab. After observing an entrenched pattern of science fraud, theft, graft, corruption, lack of concerns for safety and security, discrimination against women and minorities, and severe retaliation practices, I drove out the lab gate one day, dropped off my badge and my beeper and never went back.

I realized after only two years at the lab, that the culture of nuclear weapons was a culture of insanity. What species on earth kills its young generation after generation? What species on earth sacrifices its young for the false notion of “security”?

At the end of the millenium which gave birth to nuclear weapons, I visited the Peace Museums in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the 2000 World Conference Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs as the guest of Gensuikin. That visit to Japan changed my life when I finally understood the horrific effects of nuclear weapons. In 1991, in the first Gulf War, the United States broke a 60 year taboo and introduced depleted uranium to the battleground, a radiological weapon which is truly a weapon of indiscriminate killing and mass destruction.

Now that we know both, we must ask a question - which is worse, the horrific effects of flash annihilation from an atomic bomb or slow mutilation forever from depleted uranium weapons? "
