Secret Service questions student on drawings
Oh, boy...

PROSSER, Washington (AP) -- Secret Service agents questioned a high school student about anti-war drawings he did for an art class, one of which depicted President Bush's head on a stick.

Another pencil-and-ink drawing portrayed Bush as a devil launching a missile, with a caption reading "End the war -- on terrorism."

The 15-year-old boy's art teacher at Prosser High School turned the drawings over to school administrators, who notified police, who called the Secret Service.

2. I believe that the student's constitutional rights have been..
violated. While the Supreme Court has said that school officials may control curriculum, it has also made it very clear that students do not leave their freedom of speech at the school gate when they arrive at school. I hope the ACLU and PFAW -- the legal eagles -- take a look at this case.

3. and, the Mayor of Prosser wrote back:
I assure you that if you were to visit the City of Prosser, you would find that Freedom of Speech is alive and well. As your concern is clearly a school related issue, I cannot speculate on any policy or proceedure, but see that you have indeed contacted Mr. Ray Tolcacher, Superintendent of Prosser School District. Ray is the appropriate person to handle your question.

Thank You,

Linda Lusk
Mayor, City of Prosser

for some reason, the email copy to Superintendent Tolcacher failed to be delivered yesterday ... but, I had cc'd the School Board and the person in charge of Curriculum

there's an involved Mayor, eh? not my problem ... as if the entire image of Prosser may not be effected by the publicity ... hope she's not a Democrat ...
