What will history say about the American people, if Bush gets back in?
History has not been kind to those who place a despot in office, particularly when they know - KNOW - what he is all about. The German people have borne a heavy burden for their support of Hitler. What will history say about the American people, if they approve of letting this insanity continue?

5. Nice. You beat me to that one!
I want to put a sort of smiley here but there isn't one that says
"How right you are and how can we get rid of that insane sofofabitch squatting in the White House?"

:eyes:

Isn't that exactly what Bush said about history, according to Woodward?
That's pretty much His Smirkyness' attitude toward history; virtually a direct quote from the Woodward book. We'll all be dead. Yeah, true, but I hope we can do better, as a legacy.

4. "History?... we'll all be dead."
Seriously, I think history will judge the American people equal to those who experienced the rise of fascism in Spain, Italy, Germany, France etc., etc., etc.

26. I honestly think they'll be more harsh than that

and they should be. Spain, Italy, Germany and France experienced the rise of fascism at a time when the people's access to information was confined to newspapers and television. They had no idea what was being reported outside their own country.

We have the internet. We have access to information from all over the world. We know how other countries feel about us and Bush* ... and we know why they feel that way. In 2004, there is absolutely no excuse for ignorance. None! History will not allow us the luxury of blaming the "propaganda" because the truth was readily available to anyone who chose to see it.

Everyone at DU has made the effort to seek out the truth and stay informed. We do everything we can to inform others, even though most don't want to hear it. But the vast majority of people in this country have been consumed by laziness, apathy and self-centered ideals. They're not "victims" of the fascists ... they're enablers. Unfortunately, we're all going to pay the price for their stupidity. :(

9. The rest of the world will have to band together
and help those of us who stand up defeat the neocons.

Then, they will say

"Now that we're even, we better not hear anyone say,

and to think we saved your ass in WWII anymore."

and since the Bushes backed Hitler, the analogy historically is MORE than apt -- it is historical continuity.

15. Hitler lost some initial elections although he managed to
manuever himself into place anyway. Then fear gripped the Germans as well as a certain sense of false security. Bush is pushing this wartime President thing big time, just like Hitler. Of course you need someone to hate: Jews = Liberals, or eventually terrorists, murdering abortionists, etc. etc. etc..

Because they refused to reform an anti-democratic Constitution that installed Bush in office in the first place.

19. Too flip; and what about the rest of the world?
You think the evils of a second Bush term - which he will interpret as a sign from God - will only affect us? Did the world "deserve" Hitler? If so, which one of the dead children deserved it most?

29. that already applies to Bush's first term
He already thinks God made him President... and he's already running amok in the world. My point is only that we have Bush for one reason: we have a dysfunctional and anti-democratic election system that weighed the vote of one citizen in Bush's Florida lead 1000X more than a citizen in Gore's national lead. That Democrats STILL can't actively oppose this system is a indication of the moral bankruptcy of the Party.

20. I think you are right.
History is also going to say the rank and file American could have fixed this but were too much involved into their own lifestyles of acquisition that they didn't want to get involved in righting wrongs.

21. That all depends on who controls the present.
As Orwell said’ “He who controls the present controls the past, and he who controls the past controls the future. “
If there is a model for the future dictatorship it will be that of Big Brother. The principles of Doublespeak are present everywhere in this administration as if they used Orwell’s 1984 as a play book.

25. Depends on whose version of history gets read
If Bush gets back in, cons and rightwing fundies will write the history for America...and students will learn all about the Prophet Bush, chosen by God, to lead the American people...

if you're lucky enough to get an outside source...you'll learn how incredibly foolish the American people were....

The victors write the history...<~~ that's not just a catchy phrase.

28. That it went the way of the Roman Republic
ie morphed into an Empire, where the power is controlled by palace intrigue. The populace is kept quiet with bread and circuses, while the privileged few enjoy great luxury. Other states are 'with us or against us' (and against us means facing a huge army that shows no mercy). If you're lucky, the emperor will be sane and decent; all too often they have religious delusions, and think they talk to the gods.
