(San Francisco, California) A federal appeals court has upheld the firing of a boss who continually made homophobic comments to a lesbian employee and who tried to get her to go to a fundamentalist church "to be cured".
Kelly Carson was so frightened of losing her job at Cox Communications in Phoenix she did not report the abuse at the hands of her supervisor to her employers.
The situation only came to light after Carson applied for a transfer to the company's Omaha office. A manager at the company, not wanting to lose Carson and having heard rumors of the harassment invited her to lunch in the hopes of talking her out of the move. It was only then that the details came out.
Carson told how Evelyn Bodett, her supervisor, had made numerous anti-gay remarks. On one occasion Bodett tried to persuade her to go church with her. On another she tried to get Carson to attend a religious revival meeting.
