3. That is why it should be legalized.

For the sake of public health and safety it should be legalized and regulated.

15. But then we might be called:
'tax and f___ Democrats.' Of course, that could help the Party -- a la Clinton.

8. Lets see here
How do we prevent sick and diseased hookers from "dating" Johns while its illegal? Oh wait, here's an idea. We legalize it but we regulate and tax it. There for we can license sex workers and make sure they are healthy.

5. Sigh.
If you read this article that was recently posted on DU, you will see what the reality of prostitution is:

http://theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20040427.wxprostitut27/BNStory/National/

For some reason, even many DUers want to hold on the the illusion that prostitutes are mature, non-addicted, economically secure women who decide gleefully to service losers and perverts, but that is rarely how it happens.

The article talks about legalzing prostitution to help prostitutes "escape the trap" they are in because it IS an unpleasant trap.

And keep in mind that most sex industry customers are men who are in relationships and probably deceiving their partner about their visits to hookers.

I believe that prostitution should be decriminalized but that pimping should be treated as a serious felony, which is pretty much the approach taken by Sweden after a failed experiment with total decriminalization.

Look at amstradam and the neatherlands. Do you think by keeping it illegal we are doing anything good? Besides whats the difference between prostititution and a dinner and a movie? The only people who oppose it are prudes and insercure religious control freaks. For crying out loud the porno industry employs 6,000 people and is a 14 billion dollar a year industry that's more than all american sports combined. And it's a question of civil liberties. So do you think men that are in relationships who would ever go to a prostitute in the first place, would say hmm this is illegal perhaps i shouldn't do it. It's sex between adults, and people that oppose it are hypocrites, if you date and have sex you are a damn phony, and it makes me sick, you remind me of these limbaugh like chracters who find alcohol fine, but smoke a joint and they want to lock you up. I find it odd that anyone on this board would oppose it, yet still get on bush for being ANTI-CHOICE. damn hypocrisy applies to both sides i guess.

On Edit: Replied to the wrong post, but I aim it at all those who think it should remain illegal.

7. Decriminalized, but highly regulated.
It is so highly prone to corruption that it needs high levels of regulation, lest it become legalized slavery. Especially in the beginning, as in many cases it literally is slavery right now.

There's only two kinds of people I can see being against legalizing it. People who feel sex should only happen as an attempt to procreate, and people who fear that if it is legalized and regulated then it will become LOTS more expensive, making it harder to hide the costs from a spouse.

Regulate and tax it. And require HIV testing once a month. And establish "red light districts."
