Final Spanish Soldiers Return From Iraq
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: April 28, 2004

Filed at 9:54 a.m. ET

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- The last group of Spanish soldiers who took part in the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq returned home Wednesday from Kuwait, the Defense Ministry said.

The 260 soldiers were part of the Spanish-led contingent stationed in the south-central cities of Najaf and Diwaniya.

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero announced Tuesday in Parliament that the entire 1,300-member contingent had left Iraq, leaving another group of 700-800 troops working on logistics related to the withdrawal -- not trying to maintain peace in postwar Iraq.

2. Yeah, I hope they can live with the fact
That they've screwed our guys still in Iraq. Spain is not our friend if they've hung us out to dry like this.

Like it or not, we're in Iraq for the long haul. There is nothing we can do about it at this point, especialy with the Falujah situation. We need all the help we can get, and Spain has deserted us.

They might be of the opinion that Bush screwed them by lying about the necessity for war. I might agree.

11. No wrong turn
I'm just very emotional over this. My best friends brother is there and we feel like yes this is wrong, of course. But I personally think it is wrong of Spain to just leave us flat at this critical moment of the war when we need all the soldiers we have. Now because of Spain we'll have to send more of our own and it saddens us.

15. No, we don't have to send more of our own
The other option is to do what Spain did and bring all our people home.

Why should Spanish soldiers die for a lie?

16. Your friend should blame BFEE not the Spanish
It was an unnecessary war. I hope he is OK, but he (and you) are very misguided about the causes of this.
Please ask yourself: why did we go there again?

Spain listened to the will of its people.

Hey, you can hate on them all you want, but atleast they live in a country where public opinion and the will of the people are served.

Spain didnt desert us, we deserted ourselves by going in the first place.

Im with Kucinich on this one now. UN in, US OUT!

WE can just leave if we so choose so. Whats the point in staying anyway? to prop up some false government that will probably turn on us in 20 years like all the ones we've made before it? oh goody. i cant wait.

What exactly can we do by staying exactly ? dont you get it? they dont want us there. Yeah, they were happy we got rid of saddam, but thats where it ends. We did our job in alot of their minds and its time for us to get out of their country before they think we are the imperialists that everyone else in the world says we are.

I once agreed that you couldnt just cut and run, but I think an organised withdrawl with the support of the UN and UN troops being brought into Iraq for peace keeping, we should be fine leaving.
Our troops are not the police nor are they peace keepers. the Iraqi Police needs to lay the law down and start doing their job! whats the point of having them if they do nothing to stop the violence within their own people!

8. Excellent point
80% of Spain's population didn't want to go to war and when they elect a leader who promises to withdraw troops, it's the terrorits' fault. Right. Bush was an idiot to think he could count on a people who were marching by the millions in protest to war. Another example of his stupidity.

just because your pal does? BTW, it's not a good idea. Spain knows it. Why don't you?

13. We can get out.
It could be done, but the criminals in charge here don't want to do it.

Blame them. Don't blame the Spanish. The vast majority of them didn't want to go into Iraq. They finally elected a government that did what the people wanted.

14. They didnt screw us, they screwed the Busheviks
And, point in fact they were merely responding to the fact that this war is a lying fraud and based on a lie.

The Spanish aren't the ones who screwed our Brave Lads in Iraq, the Imperial Tyrants who seized Amerika are. Our Boys should be out hunting al-Qaeda. Instead, al-Qaeda grows stronger by the day.

Spain has not deserted us. They have deserted Imperial Tyranny of the Busheviks.

And I cannot hold that against them nor any nation.

Spain has said it will NOT appease Hitler-like Tyrants anymore.

Thus they have dropped out of the Imperial Amerikan Coalition of the Bribed and Bullied.

Think about it.

By the by, USAF Veteran here.

10. Images like this always get me teary eyed
The news footage of the recent homecoming of Ft. Hood soldiers had me crying like a baby. Such a wonderful, moving thing to see.

It's easy to focus on the heroism of soldiers, but I think people tend to overlook the strength and courage the spouses of soldiers have. When my brother goes to war, it's my sister in-law who raises two boys, works, and keeps an optimistic face for her children while her heart stops every time she hears bad news. I don't know if I have that kind of strength. I can't imagine having a child in war. That's my idea of pure hell.
