Human Kleenex - *'s bad manners on Letterman
Edited on Wed Apr-28-04 02:18 PM by PatGund
On the David Letterman show, George Bush showed some appallingly bad manners.

During a commercial break, Letterman producer Mary Pope was on stage discussing something with Letterman. She was standing in front of Bush.

Bush reached over, grabbed the back of her sweater, and used it to clean his glasses.

Video at:

http://www.bushflash.com/unb.html

No matter how anyone feels about him, that's just flat out, unspinable, rude.

(On edit, I was informed it was recent, it turned out to be from the 2000 campaign. My apologizes for the error.)

2. This happened before the 2000 election
but it does show Shrub's total disregard for others.

4. Lie. Propaghanda.
That link didn't show what happened BEFORE Bush was cleaning his glasses. For all we know that lady probably gave him the go ahead to do so.

Geez, people. I hate Bush, too, but that is not the way.

5. So because you *think* there *may* be permission
the story Dave has been telling for four years is a lie and propoghanda (sic)?

Ohhhhkaaaaay then. :eyes:

9. Is it not possible...
...that somebody might have told him backstage that if he needs anyting done during a commercial break, to help himself to anything he can get his hands on?

I'm not saying he's innocent - I'm just saying we don't know if he's guilty.

And what the hell makes Letterman such a reliable information source? He's just as biased as anybody, only he's biased towards comedy. If it's funnier to say Bush was being an ass, he'll say Bush was being an ass.

14. I dunno
Seems to me that Dave was willing to own up to the veracity of the yawning boy tape, only the WH was lying, and it was real. But clearly he wasn't going to just leave it out there if it wasn't.

Same with this, bozo's had three years to say 'hey they said I could!' and he hasn't. Tells us everything.

Also, consider occam's razor. Bush is a privileged failure who's had his butt wiped for him his whole life. You really think it's so farfetched to think he'd do this? I don't.

25. I'm not Miss Manners, but even I know ...
... that it looks pretty weird to be wiping your glasses on somebody else's clothing, even if that person says it's okay (and I have NEVER encountered such a situation). Mr. Bush has had a much more sophisticated upbringing than mine, what with going to Andover and mixing with high society. He'd already served as an elected official by the time he did the Letterman show, and just about the first thing any candidate learns is that people are observing your conduct all the time! At the very least it showed poor judgement, on his part -- just like the "major league" comment into that microphone he thought was off.

29. are your eyes reliable?
it's right there to see, Letterman isn't making a claim with words, he's been showing this vid for 4 years now. It's amazing how much twisting and bending over backwards that needs to be done to "excuse" this

they want to talk about "character", well there it is. Feel free to imagine a scenario where this is acceptible all you want.

6. Ummm...no it isn't.

Lettermem has played that clip on his show several times and given the story behind it.

What you see is proof of what a piece of shit * is.

What's a better way to fight bush? Maybe agree with him on everything and act spineless? Seems to have gotten us pretty far don't you think?

12. I completely disagree.
First of all, I need explained to me, KissMyAsscroft, what exactly makes Letterman such a reliable source of information.

Secondly, there are better ways to fight Bush than by presenting unsubstantiated crap like this. Honestly. And that doesn't ean we have to agree or be spineless. This man sucks up the issues worse than any President of our modern era. Let's get him on the issues, and let the GOP fling all the useless, incorrect bullshit.

21. Better ways?
Sure. So what? Who says this is even a way of "fighting" Bush?

Bush makes people feel angry, violated and afraid. If attacking him for his every real, perceived and imaginary fault makes them feel a little better, why shouldn't they do it? Bush lost whatever claim he had to the benefit of the doubt long ago.

Nobody is suggesting that Kerry make glasses-wiping part of his platform, but without a little fun, healthy Bush-bashing, I'd have long since gone mad.

30. Unsubstantiated crap?
Good grief! Letterman was there. Are you suggesting Letterman is lying? Why would he lie about this when Bush* consistently provides laughable shake-your-head-in-disbelief material?

Sure there are better ways to fight Bush*. Everyone in DU knows there are far more horrific things he has done. But I ask you, what's so wrong in discussing the demeanor of a man sitting before an audience, campaigning for the President of the United States of America?

Bush* displayed bad manners. Even if he was given permission as you suggest; in my Randi Rhodes/ Judge Judy voice: IT WAS BAD MANNERS!

It sounds as if you have a bigger beef with Letterman than you do with Bush*, why is that?

10. No *W is plain fucking RUDE
And classless to boot to treat another human being with such disrespect.

Bush needed a good spanking a long time ago. Unfortunately for us, he never got it. Bar was definitely falling down on the job.

See that clip you know exactly why he can send our soldiers to fight and die for no good reason other than his ego.

Anyone--never mind a world leader--who behaves that inexplicably and inappropriately in a public setting should be suspected of having a serious mental or personality disorder.

26. and that's not the half of it ...
I recall seeing at least two other pics on Kevin Cunningham's www.politicalstrikes.com page -- one of them was from during the 2000 campaign, where Bush was reaching for a bald African-American reporter's head, with both hands -- and a weird gleeful expression on his face. Bizarre.
