What, exactly (or even approximately) is Freedom?
Edited on Wed Apr-28-04 06:59 PM by Snoggera
I've seen the word bandied about for the past few years as if it has no true relationship to peoples day-to-day lives. It is used to justify death and war. It is used by those who hope for a reduction in civil rights.

It is not just a historical word with meaning that brings tears to the eyes (just as listening to America the Beautiful might).

Freedom means what?

3. I was going to try and argue
with your reasoning, but am unsure.

My first thought was child abuse. I'll have to think it through a little more.

4. The right of a few hundred corporations and their
media-whores and bought so-called parties to enslave humanity. And those, who don't agree, are fundamentalists/stalinists/leninists/islamists/defenders of evil dictators/terrorists and deserve to be imprisoned or killed or liberated.

Hello from Germany,

5. Freedom is just another word..
To experience freedom is to live free of encumberances like bigotry, greed, covetnous, and ill-will. It is having Justice and Liberty in your life and giving Justice and Liberty to other human beings and the rest of the occupants of this little blue ball spinning in space.

Peace. Be Free...

7. There's an old story:
A little child asked her father the meaning of freedom. He told her to find out by going out and catching a bird. The child caught a bird, put it in a cage, and was saddened when it died. "Why did the bird die?" she asked her father. "Didn't the bird like it here?" "No, that is not it," the father answered. "No one can define freedom, but lack of it killed that bird."

8. ability to exercise rights without oppression.
Rights to do what you believe is right while not infringing upon others.
Unfortunately by that definition, B*sh has taken away our freedoms here.

9. Freedom is the opposite of control.
Freedom without self-control is anarchy. Control without justifiable reason is tyranny.

It is difficult to keep a balance between freedom and control.
