Nancy vetoes 'Ronald Reagan University' |
|
What is the fascination with Ronald Reagan? -According to CNN- Nancy Reagan said she appreciated the founders' intentions but suggested that Reagan supporters focus on the education program at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. http://www.cnn.com/2004/EDUCATION/04/30/reagan.university.ap/index.html

1. She vetoed the Reagan dime, too. |
|
Does the woman have some sense, after all?
Or, does she realize that this opens up a chance for Ronnie's detractors to criticize him?

3. ya know, she never liked the Bushes |
|
or the wingnuts. Look at her son whom she loves dearly. He reamed the Bushistas once when he hosted Crossfire. Anyway, maybe she isn't so bad after all; maybe she hates them as much as we do.

6. I've always hated Nancy, but... |
|
I'm having a hard time explaining away her recent sensible actions on partisan reasons. I don't believe that she is worried about criticism of her husband. Right wingers are so loyal to Reagan that even if it were shown he regularly killed and eat small children, they would rationalize it (he was hungry - everyone needs food), or blame it on Carter/Clinton. No one (except me) seems to have a problem with the USS Reagan Aircraft Carrier (the first to be named for a living president) or renaming National Airport (I just can't bring myself to type it out).
The right is so in love with the Reagan myth that they would rename everything after him if they could. To them, Ronni is the second coming of Christ.
So why is Nancy becoming a speed bump? Perhaps she has had it with the RNC using her husband in every way they can. Perhaps she sees him as a man, rather than a deity. I don't' know, maybe her astrologer told her the stars weren't aligned properly for RRU.

Washington NATIONAL Airport.
Grew up in DC and lived there for 40 years. No way in fucking hell will I ever refer to National as Reagan. Pissed me off royally that during Clinton's 8 years in office, all the repuke Congress did was persecute Bill and rename my hometown airport after the bastard who fired the PATCO (professional air traffic control) workers and busted up their union.
Shit, now I'm mad all over again.

12. National - the way it's supposed to be |
|
I am all over that one too. That fucking hack Bob Barr from my state spent more time pushing to rename all things Reagan than anything else during his tenure.

Bob and Newt were given the boot and unfortunately for you, neighbor, they're both back in Georgia. Here in my adopted state of SC(husband's home), the congenital repuke voters sent Lindsay Graham (only claim to fame was being a House Manager during the impeachment) to the US Senate. :puke:
Wish there were some sort of Siberia named Reagan Country for their kind ...

15. I always found it ironic that they named airports after RR. |
|
I also have lived in dc all my life, and I refer to it as National also.

2. Nancy knows that all this Ronald adoration is based on make-believe. |
|
Ronald Reagan was always just playing a role. Like Bush, he was just following someone else's agenda, but his acting career gave him an edge. He was more convincing than Bush.
I really don't see how Arnold expects to follow in his footsteps. I don't see a man who is really quick-witted there.

4. Her devotion is to Ronnie -- NOT to the RW boosh* ideology |
|
Which is why I think the fear (in some circles) that his death would be used to "rally-'round-the-boosh" is overstated. She likes the booshes about as much as we do, from what I've picked up here and there. I don't think she'd ever permit it.
Just MHO. Your Mileage May Vary.

I didn't care much for Queen Nancy as FL, but in the post presidential years she seems different--totally committed to RR the man and the Alzheimers patient and less concerned with his historical reputation. I like her far more than that old hag known as Babs.

7. Ronald Reagan and the Culture war |
|
Republican presidents prior to Ronnie drew from the same moral reconning as the Dems have. That is from a basic recognition that this is a diverse culture and even if you don't believe it you have to argue within that context. Reagan as the "great communicator" spoke in tones of certainty rather than conidering ideas. He gave the republicans confidence by speaking what they believed to be true. To hell with what other people believed.
This is the contact point in this conflict before America today. Reagan brought pride back after the turmoil that Carter's uncertainty dragged us through (nevermind that much of that turmoil was orchestrated by Reagan/Bush). The right felt as though Reagan's confidence lifted them out of the miasma left over from Vietnam and other failures in the world.
There are few things that can lift a people like believing that all things good and divine are on their side. This is what the right is selling to them. They no longer feel they need to question their actions. They are in the right and any that oppose them are obviously evil. And Reagan was the visible leader they believe lead them there.

8. She did go along with the aircraft carrier and the airport renaming |
|
though Ron Junior refused to attend the carrier christening with Nancy. He said he didn't need symbols of war to bolster his memory of his father.
Ronnie & Nancy only used the religious right to get them into office. They never did anything for them once they were installed. The fundies never got the joke, though. RR never even went to church.

9. As much as I hate Nancy and Ron both... |
|
one thing you can say about her is that she is devoted to him. And I can understand why after seeing a segment on one of the news shows about them about a year ago. They showed some of the love letters he wrote her and I would dearly love for someone to write that kind of thing to me.

10. I'm definitely no fan of Nancy, but |
|
I do have some admiration for her gumption and intelligence. She knows exploitation when she sees it and (undoubtedly knows) all the nasty little agendas behind it...
Plus she has always detested that detestable old witch, Babs Bush, so she can't be all bad!
