The Irony of it all
"Nightline" was born during the Iranian Hostage crisis.

I remember ABC doing a expanded nightly broadcast to keep America abreast of the hostage crisis. ABC ultimately made the show permanent, and Nightline was born.

I don't remember anyone crying about the coverage then.

I guess because a Democrat was president at the time.

1. Oh, yeah!
And remember how they started the evening news with...

"America...held hostage...day number XXX"

That didn't hurt Carter, no sir.

2. We should support Republicans when they have a "crisis" but....
when a Democrat has a "crisis" we should attack them for "failing"!

3. Yup
And that the hostages were released within minutes of Ronnie being sworn in, and nobody said dick about that remarkable turn of events (yeah, the idea of an October Surprise has percolated up occasionally, but it's been consigned to Unproven Conspiracy Theory status). Same as it ever was...

4. Despite the fact that Carter was doing all he could behind the scenes
to get the hostages out, Reagan takes the credit.

I can just see it:

Carter: Please release them!

Bush: Please don't release them yet!

Ayatollah: Those dumbf--k Americans.

5. Al Franken made this point
prior to his interview with Ted Koppel on today's show.

(it was excellent, btw)
