Patriotism for a secularist
I/We need a slogan,

I sometimes like to wear my patriotism on my sleeve,
and I don't know how.....

"God Bless America" seems like such a sheep's approval of bush's evangelical world view.....

I need a new slogan, one that states my patriotism, but lacks the tacit approval of the republican party platform.

1. "I love America" or the old standby "E Pluribus Unum"
You remember, it used to be our national motto.

7. oh, yeah, I vaguely remember something about freedom in there...
Edited on Fri Apr-30-04 12:57 PM by truthspeaker
Including the freedom to have whatever religious beliefs you want and to pray, or not, at a time and place of your choosing. Well Nancy Pelosi says that freedom is embarrassing and who am I to argue with the Democratic House leader?

3. Can we come out yet? (/humor)
I agree. Unfortunately logic and reason on its own do not a movement make. You need to engage the peoples emotions. Get their attention.

5. I started signing letters "Peace and Liberty"
Instead of "Sincerely," which is anything but, or "Peace," which sounds like you're auditioning for a revival of Hair.

11. I want a VERY pro America bumpersticker on one side of my car
and the Kerry/???? sticker on the other side,

I WANT the statement to be made that Republicans do not own Patriotism,
quite the opposite.

Far more patriotic than "oh, please God, bless America, because we're really scared".

While I don't care for the religiosity (is that a word?) of "God Bless America" it is the inherent cowardice in that statement that really bugs me. My typical response is "you can keep your god's blessings. MY America can take care of itself."

15. I guess the real question is
What does patriotism mean to you? Does it mean your country right or wrong? Or is it more complex. You kind of are facing the issue that makes it easy for repukes to grab the patriot label and tough for the left. The right see things in black and white. Absolutes. Its easy to wave a flag and chant USA USA USA if you believe USA can do no wrong. A bit more difficult if you make yourself aware of the ills that our nation has.

17. I have no problem with the complex
The Constitution is complex. Therefore I wrap me and mine in it. I've seen my fellow dumbass conservative citizens wrap themselves in the flag with zero concern for the complex (the constitution). I swore to support and defend the complex for 24+ years. Burn the flag, I'll stand by and watch. Fuck with the constitution, I'll get extremely medieval and complex on your ass.

(Not you the poster, but my brilliant fellow citizens who happen to be conservative).

18. I have arguments with Conservative friends
Who always whine that I am harsher on America than I am of other nations in the world.

I always try to tell them that
1. Yes you are right,
2. here's why. I live here. I love this country. I want this country to live up to the ideals that we espouse. I want us to be the greatest nation on earth in word and deed.

So my patriotism is a reflection of that.

I may shred our leaders, I may shred our policies...
I hate it when we are proven to be hypocrites.....

But I am still proud to be an american, and respect the ideals our nation was created around.

It may be hokey.
it may be inconsistent.
but I believe in protecting the right to burn the flag.
but still get touched when I see it wave.
