TRANSCRIPT of George Bush's racist remarks today
I transcribed this myself from C-Span. It's interesting that in such a brief press conference, these deeply stupid and racist remarks mysteriously do not appear in any of the news articles.

Q: What is Canada doing on Iraq both diplomatically and in terms eventually of getting, possibly putting troops on the ground there?

Bush: My first answer to that is I want Canada to do what it feels comfortable doing in Iraq. And that's what I told the Prime Minister before. Canada is an independent nation. Canada makes its decisions based upon her own judgment. The Prime Minister shares my deep desire for there to be peace in the world. To the extent that the country feels comfortable helping that, we're grateful.

Canada's doing a lot in Afghanistan, Canada's doing a lot in Haiti, Canada is a contributor to reconstruction in Iraq and I am grateful to be able to talk to a friend who shares the same goal, which is affecting behavior in a way that's based upon our values, of human rights, human dignity, and freedom. And we've got no better partner in understanding the power of free societies.

You know there's a lot of people in the world who don't believe that, that people whose skin color may not be the same as ours can be free and self governing. I reject that. I reject that strongly. I believe that people who practice the Muslim faith can self-govern. I believe that people whose skins aren't necessarily, you know, are a different color than white, can self-govern.

And the Prime Minister, I don't want to put words in his mouth, but I think he shares that great sense of optimism and possibility. And it's good to have a friend who shares that with us. Would you like to have the first lady come on up?

Martin: I've got to tell you, I like sharing a press conference with you, you answered those questions perfectly.

Bush: Thank you. Record that.

16. Will the Kool Kids ask him who "ours" is? Or...
Will they ask chimp if he was admitting that, aside from a token few, his government is lily white? Will they ask him if he was implying that the only real Americans are white? Will they ask him to name just one of the "a lot of" people who say that brown skinned people can't govern themselves?

Gee, I wish that the PM had come on this trip with our Governor-General (who's Chinese-Canadian, and is our acting head of state).

I especially love how Mr. Bush swerved to avoid finishing the original sentence, and smirked with pleasure at how clever he was.

p.s. Shall I open a bottle of sparkling "white" wine, since Mr. Bush has seen fit to declare me and tens of millions of other non-white Canadians and Americas as honourary Caucasians?

15. Agreed! Martin's comment was outrageous, imo!
Perfect??? bush's answers were perfect? This coming from the Prime Minister who's country is very proud of it's multicultural philosophy and population. This Canadian will be sending a scathing e-mail on this! (I vote Liberal, for those who might think that I am upset at him for a political reason)

19. I wonder if Martin was being very subtle ...
I hope! I didn't think of him as the kind of guy who teased others in public, but his choice of the word "perfect", given it was the day after that much-lauded answered-every-question interlude in the Oval Office ... it came across as being a bit ironic.

And then at the end, Martin invited his counterpart to the farm ... and somebody in the press corps got in a joke about riding ... the PM managed to spin it so that it left some doubt about WHO would need the riding lessons. (And the PM's owned/worked his farm for many years, so my guess is that he's familiar with livestock.)

25. I bet he didn't hear a word of bush's response re "brown-skinned"...
it is very easy to tune out bush but that doesn't excuse his comment, imo. No reporter asked him for a comment, there was no need for him to comment at all and, for him to say what he did, at the very least, shows either ass-kissing or a lack of listening skills. I honestly think he should hear from supporters, which I am, at how inappropriate his comment was under the circumstances.

14. This is *'s second reference to skin color in public
He made some remark about skin color and freedom during his "press conference" a few weeks back. It seems like under pressure the foundation of the new GOP -- out-and-out racism -- is beginning to squirt out. They're going to have to pay a lot of minorities to sit up front in camera range at their convention in NYC, if they want to maintain the fiction that they are an inclusive party.

He's gotten it into his head that this is a witty thing to say, just like the "trifecta" joke after 9/11. We'll probably hear it a couple more times before his feeders and groomers tell him it's probably offending some people.

(Der Spiegel) – It was Condoleezza Rice, national security advisor, who helped her boss out of the embarassing situation. During a conversation between the presidents of the U.S. and Brazil, George W. Bush, 55, and Fernando Henrique Cardoso, 71, Bush bewildered his colleague with the question, “Do you have blacks, too?”

Rice, 47, noticing how astonished the Brazilian was, saved the day by telling Bush, “Mr. President, Brazil probably has more blacks than the USA. Some say it’s the country with the most blacks outside Africa.” Later, Brazilian President Cardoso said, regarding Latin America, Bush was still in his “learning phase.”

Is there anything more he can do to drive a wedge into international relations?

61. Somebody else posted it earlier, I saved it
I wish I could remember who. It's an awesome list.

Click away, folks! I sent out about twenty in maybe ten minutes!

Here's what I said:

subj: GWB actually said this? Today? Yup, he sure did:

And I quote:

"You know there's a lot of people in the world who don't believe that, that people whose skin color may not be the same as ours can be free and self governing. I reject that. I reject that strongly. I believe that people who practice the Muslim faith can self-govern. I believe that people whose skins aren't necessarily, you know, are a different color than white, can self-govern. "

Thought this might make a good story. People should know about this.

I honestly think he had tuned out bush and inadvertently chose the worst moment to make the comment he did. That does NOT excuse him, imo, he should have been listening and realized how racist bush's response was. I just sent him an e-mail quoting bush's response and how disgusted I was with his own. I support him as PM and believe he needs to hear from us when he screws up like he just did.

I reject that (not). I reject that strongly (not-not). I believe that people who practice the Muslim faith can self-govern (in hell!). I believe that people whose skins aren't necessarily, you know, are a different color than white, can self-govern. (I have my head so far up my ass I'm not sure exactly what THAT means).

44. He's accusing critics of the war
of being racist. It's the usual Orwellian trick of reversing the debate to accuse others of what he's guilty of himself.

The fact that he implies that all Americans and Canadians are white and all Muslims are non-white is incredibly offensive in that it mixes up race, religion and nationality in a very simplistic and absurd way.

47. bush has turned the Oval Office into the Offal Office...
here is the dictionary definition of offal which I think perfectly reflects what is coming out of there since bush's selection.

One entry found for offal.

Main Entry: of·fal
Pronunciation: 'o-f&l, 'ä-
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from of off + fall
Date: 14th century
1 : the waste or by-product of a process: as a : trimmings of a hide b : the by-products of milling used especially for stock feeds c : the viscera and trimmings of a butchered animal removed in dressing
2 : RUBBISH

The world will be very happy to see Kerry return it to being the Oval Office again.

60. But that's how his mind works from moment to moment -
"in a very simplistic and absurd way."

In fact, I'm tempted to guess that he doesn't even realize how some people might take those remarks. Just doesn't get it. I bet he thought he was saying something REALLY magnanimous to people of color, realizing that he should reach out to them and make gestures, so they'll think he's great and will turn out for him in November.

He's just plainly and simply thick. Stunted emotional growth at - what age did some people say, here? Maybe 6 or 7 years old? Four perhaps?

69. as Gene Wilder once lamented, "How do you explain poor taste ...
... to somebody who actually has it?"

As you say, calimary -- I think he's absorbed the pre-civil-rights-era attitudes that today would be seen as patronizing or inappropriate, e.g. "you're a credit to your race". I'm sure that compared with 1890s opinions, George W. WOULD appear favourable (though back then he probably would have gone along with the crowd and not taken a bold stance to support tolerance). And he thought he would appear really conciliatory and sophisticated. (During the same event, he tried to appear completely blase when the Prime Minister suddenly switched to French ... but of course he couldn't resist poking fun at reporter David Gregory's bilingualism, again.)

I've seen individuals utter the phrase "you people" and look around proudly, hoping someone will notice that they didn't say "n*****" or "c****"", and I got the same impression from Mr. Bush's speech today. It seemed so forced and self-conscious that I couldn't help being embarrassed.

84. Exactly!! I thought the same thing.
He's accusing anyone who opposed the Iraq invasion of being racist. This IS an old propaganda trick. He's telling people that the only reason anyone opposed his war was a lack of faith in the Iraqi people, which could only stem from racism. (Projection? Straw man? who knows?)

This has the added benefit of letting all the real racists off the hook. How? If you support the war in Iraq, you aren't a racist--by definition, no matter what bigotry lives in your heart. In Bush*'s bizarro world, anyway.

I've heard Bush* say this before, but he's not the only one. Rumsfeld has also made this argument. Also Perle and Wolfowitz. Probably it's on their talking points list....

ALL of their propaganda tricks need to be exposed. But it is indeed endless--the poison they spew.

let's review:
"You know there's a lot of people in the world who don't believe that, that people whose skin color may not be the same as ours can be free and self governing"

surely he's not speaking about the american people, since "we" are not all white. i'm sure he knows many of those "lots of people" who believe people of color need white folks' supervision to govern themselves. and of course, since he's "still learning" about the world, i bet he also doesn't know that most of the world's population isn't white.
makes you wonder why he would even mention those "lots of people" in the first place

Then he was so pleased with himself at having got through that, he decided to toss in a few more remarks off the cuff. And THAT's where you get to see how he really thinks. He's such a racist he doesn't even realize he's making racist remarks. He's PLEASED with himself.

he called them brown people in his press conference a couple weeks ago which I think is far worse than this --- someone obviously told him it was a mistake to say it --- so being the smart man that he is the President now just says 'different color than white". His comments are stupid, but not racist, IMHO.

It smells like Dan Quayle saying "Its a terrible thing to lose one's mind." Or ROss Perot saying "you people." That is stupid. Too much so to be racist. In case we haven't noticed, George W Shrub is not a very bright man.

His message is (sorta) clear. Its the same one other leaders in the black community have said - more eloquently - for ages. Its true. We just don't want to hear it from HIM.

On this one, I say he can jump in a lake for trying to pander to me. If he had my interests, or those of arabs, at heart, his policies would reflect that. Having said that, at least he tried (to pander). Some politicians - like Joe Schmo Lieberman for example, don't even go THAT far.

"Our" is America. At least that's how I read it. That makes it even more dumb. He is repeating what he heard other people say, in reverse. I guess he is trying to feel our pain. Well it came out pretty stupid. Not new for Bush at all.

It would be the same if a black person said "our people" to Perot, only to have Perot reply "you people." Its a dumb, poorly-worded response to a very valid point made by many on our side.

Nothing against this story per se, but good lord, on today of all days? It was the kind of story you END a newscast with.

We all need to contact as many people in the media as possible and tell them "HEY! Pay attention, assholes!"

I was pretty pissed at CBS for doing their fluff piece on the saintly warriors in Afghanistan instead of covering the days news. That piece was probably produced months ago.
