I Copied The LARGE Version Of The "Bush-Mosaic" Image To A Memory Card...
... the 2.3 MEG version (not the small one).

I took the flash memory card to the Costco photo lab to have three 8x10's made of it. I inserted my memory card into the computer and used the touch-screen to select which image, how many copies, what size, and finished by choosing glossy paper.

When I returned to pick up my prints, the woman at the counter asked "are you here for the 8x10 of George Bush?" --- I answered that I was.

She smiled and was all excited when she commented "That's a COOL effect, I really like that". --- I'm guessing that she hadn't seen mosaic images before, and she was impressed with the fact that all of the smaller military portraits had been used to create a portrait of George W. Bush.

I responded "Yes, it's an interesting effect, but there's really not much for me to like about it. Those are pictures of our troops who have died in Iraq fighting Bush's war."

INSTANTLY, the smile disappeared from her face. Her eyes dropped as she looked at the photos one last time. She paused for a second and said "Oh... Dear." Then she put them in the envelope and handed them to me.

It was difficult for me to tell how she felt about Bush... but it was obvious that the picture had a profound impact on her. She said very little else after that, other than to thank me for my purchase.

Here's the URL for the large image... You'll need to cut and paste it into your browser's address line (and remove the extra space before the file name) http://photomatt.net/dropbox/2004/04/ bush-large.jpg

Or you can click the first part of the link and explore "Photo Matt's" web folders for yourself. In any case... it's only $1.99 for an 8x10 photo enlargement... it's suitable for framing... it makes a PROFOUND statement and a perfect gift for your freeper relatives and friends and co-workers.

3. It's a hard way to open a person's eyes, but I know that it's important
work.

Would you happen to know if those pictures were lightened/brightened/colored to get the effect needed?

4. I've looked closely at the images, and I'm thinking that you are correct.
It's very likely that each image has probably been lightened or darkened just a bit to enhance the effect of its placement.

5. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT SOFTWARE WAS USED FOR THIS EFFECT??
I've got a few ideas that I'd like to put together using the same technique. Anyone know what the program is...? And where it can be obtained??

16. I'm not sure exactly which one they used Allen
But there are several software packages that are designed to do this.

Just do a google search for photo mosaic software and you'll get quite a few hits.

Without your permission. I didn't think you would.

10. Do I really need to explain the obvious?
If you lost a loved one would you want their picture used by anyone that wants to use it for whatever their cause without your permission?

if Bush "used my son/daughter for whatever his cause without my permission" I'd have to say you're making the point for us.

18. I also have mixed feelings...
When I first saw this collage I thought it was great. I understand the work that went into compiling it and I saw it as a reminder of the cost of the war. Now, though, I'm not so sure that Bush has any right to be represented in any way by the soldiers' images. Whoever got the idea certainly was able to start a lot of people thinking, eh?

Actually, the one that uses all (ahem!) backsides to form Bush's image is probably more appropriate to say in a picture who he is.

19. idea for a 30-sec spot
Start tight on one of the pics, full screen. Pan slowly left to the next pic, and the next pic, and the next pic. Slowly pull out whilw panning, showing four pics per screen, then nine, then twelve. Keep panning left and pulling out, then start panning down.

Slowly, the full image begins to come into focus. Is that an eye? A face? Who...?
