National Chickenhawk Day
With Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day and the 60th anniversary of D-Day coming up, I thought it would be nice to initiate a national day in honor of GW and his pals in the rethuglican party. This would be a great day to write your newspaper, call in to your favorite call-in show (especially ass-boil Limbaugh) and generally spread the word about the chickenhawk faithful.

I would propose a date of May 28, so as not to interfere with legitimate and honorable holidays.

The Dishonor Roll of Chickenhawks:

GW - obviously.
Cheney - 2 deferments, "Had other priorities"
Att'y Gen. John Ashcroft - did not serve; received seven deferment to teach business ed at SW Missouri State
Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert - avoided the draft, did not serve.
Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey - avoided the draft, did not serve.
House Majority Leader Tom Delay - avoided the draft, did not serve "So many minority youths had volunteered ... that there was literally no room for patriotic folks like himself."
House Majority Whip Roy Blunt - did not serve
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist - did not serve.
Majority Whip Mitch McConnell, R-KY - did not serve
Rick Santorum, R-PA, third ranking Republican in the Senate - did not serve.
Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott - avoided the draft, did not serve.
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich - avoided the draft, did not serve
Phil Gramm - avoided the draft, did not serve, four student deferments
Representative Saxby Chambliss, Georgia - did not serve (1, 2), had a "bad knee" (yet somehow feels he has a right to attack Max Cleland's patriotism)
Eliot Abrams, did not serve (1, 2) (however, played a key role in subverting democracy in South America)
Paul Wolfowitz, did not serve (1, 2)
Former Representative Vin Weber, did not serve (1, 2)
Richard Perle, did not serve
Rep. John M. McHugh, R-NY - avoided the draft, did not serve (1)
Arnold Schwarzenegger - went AWOL from his Austrian army base to enter a bodybuilding competition
George Will, did not serve
Bill O'Reilly, did not serve
Rush Limbaugh, did not serve (4-F with a 'pilonidal cyst)
Michael Savage (aka Michael Alan Weiner) - did not serve

2. Actually I don't blame anyone for not serving
Edited on Wed May-05-04 08:07 AM by demnan
in the Vietnam war. It was a senseless war and all the guys my brothers' age were trying to find a way out. What I do object to is the sending of other people's sons to fight a senseless war. So what these vermin are doing now is far worse than what they did back then.

edit: spelling

3. But I think that's the point
Its not that we have an problem with them not wanting to serve in Vietnam. I wouldn't have wanted to, and I therefore can't blame anyone for not wanting to serve in a senseless war.

BUT, where I take objection is exactly what you mentioned. I have a problem when people who weasled out of war suddenly get in power and start pimping war all over the globe.

13. The other point, of course, is HOW they weaseled out.
Most of them used family influence (* and Quayle in the NG) or an elite position -- attending law school, teaching in a private school -- to avoid service. These were options not available to the poor, working-class, and middle-class youth who were drafted or at least subject to the draft.

And now they're sending someone else's poor, working-class, and middle-class children to die in a war that DIRECTLY BENEFITS the chickenhawks and their personal fortunes, either in terms of actually profits or the more ephemeral coin of prestige and power.

:puke: on 'em, one and all.

4. It's not the point of not serving...
Edited on Wed May-05-04 08:15 AM by SEpatriot
It's the point of not serving and attacking other people's patriotism and sending other people to die for their radical agendas. Jackson Browne said "...they can be counted on to tell us who are enemies are, but they're never the ones to fight and to die..."

7. Even more basic: advocating war while having dodged it yourself
never forget the "hawk" part of the word.

11. I think this would be a very good idea.
It is time for some real national attention to this fact. They wrap themselves in the flag and talk the macho talk but when their time to serve they said don't send me. Let's see how many war vets will stand up for this bunch on such a day. They deserve as much attention as possible because they are so anxious to send our troops off to die. They are Cowards and need to be confronted on it.
