...in Japanese bookstores in NYC. They have to take what Bush says, figure out the correct idiom he was going for, and explain what that means and how he messed it up.

I've also seen pleanty of Japanese translations of books by Greg Palast, Michael Moore, on the Carlyle Group, Bush-Saudi connections, and other books that are commonly on peoples' reading lists hereabouts on DU.

This is going to be tricky for Karen Hughes to script. She knows that the Arab stations will let American stations pick up on the interview so it has to be apologetic to the Arab world but still reflect the "strong leader" theme at home. Hard to mix those messages.

Al Hurra, the 'Arab TV station' that Shrub is speaking on is US funded and well-known as US propaganda in the Middle East -- nobody watches it there.

Here's Juan Cole's assessment of Al Hurra:

Allam notes that the US alternative, al-Hurra, provides less than an hour of hard news per day, and is widely ridiculed in Iraq as the gardening channel because of the pablum in which it specializes. Even when it does news, it can't be very effective. I saw a program list recently, and it started off with an interview with Elie Wiesel about how he can't support the Palestinian cause because Palestinians engage in violence. At a time when the US siege of Fallujah was fresh in everyone's minds, this must have struck Arab viewers as the crock of steaming excrement that it is. And if that is the lead segment on the US-provided 45 minutes of news, then the US may as well not bother.

He's supposed to give an interview with Al Arabiya later, which is more widely watched, but we'll see if he actually does that...

The only reason he's doing these interview is to 'underscore' his 'position' for the sake of the US political audience.
