Survey: Independents Wary of Vote in '04--From Lieberman Camp
Edited on Sat Aug-09-03 06:52 PM by XanthaS
(This story is a few days old. Sorry if it's a repost)

This is a strange, two-part article which begins with a survey report, and ends with a story about Howard Dean.

The survey was done by Mark Penn, whom the article states is "a former pollster for President Clinton who is currently working for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Lieberman." Therefore, the pollster definitely wanted to come to the conclusion--for the benefit of Lieberman--that most voters are moderate-conservative. The article also talks about "office-park dads" as opposed to "soccer moms."

WASHINGTON - Independents, who outnumber Democrats or Republicans, need a good reason to head to the voting booth, according to a survey released Thursday.

The poll, conducted for the New Democratic Network, found that slightly more than 40 percent identify themselves as independents, 32 percent called themselves Republicans and 27 percent said they were Democrats. But these so-called "swing voters" were more than twice as likely not to vote than people who consider themselves Republican or Democrat, a factor for the candidates running in the 2004 election.

********

Part 2 of the article

The head of the Republican Party in Vermont called on Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean to open all his gubernatorial records, including those he had sealed for a decade.

1. Gee I hope Dean said he'd open them as soon as Georgie Boy
and Tricky Dicky II open their secret files!

2. I believe they were sealed at the same time too...
...like a time capsule. I'll show you mine if you show me yours. And if it accomplished breaking the seal on Poppy and Juniors records, well, yahoo, I'm all for that...

3. 27 percent considered themselves Democrats?
That seems pretty low. I figured it was about the same percentage as Repubs, a third or so.

4. Independents won't vote for Lieberman
I am an independent (going to switch to Democrat when I get around to it). I chose not to register as a Democrat precisely *because* I didn't want to be in the same party as gutless Republicrats like Lieberman. My politics are not necessarily representative of all Independents, but I think my feelings of disgust with politicians like Lieberman is the reason most independents (left-leaning or right-leaning) don't register with either party. Howard Dean would be their man, because, like them, he's pissed off and he's an outsider. And really, that counts for more than what he actually stands for. When Independents say they vote for the man, and not the party, I think that to a certain extent they mean they vote for the man, and not the issue.

(It took GW Bush to show me that the Independent stand is a dead-end, btw)
