Is anyone following the response of Bush's Christian Base?
I'm wondering if anybody out there has been following the reactions, official or otherwise, of Bush's extreme Christian voter base -- the ones who want this war and this administration for eschatological reasons of their own. How are they rationalizing Bush's obvious loss of control and loss of this war?

Any blogs? News releases? 700 Club sermons to give us a clue of where they stand?

11. He advocated assasinating the head of N. Korea a few years ago
Robertson supports hit men

On his August 10th "700 Club" television show, Pat Robertson said the US should kill world leaders it doesn't like. He called for a change in US foreign policy to include the assassination of foreign leaders.

"I know it sounds somewhat Machiavellian and evil, to think that you could send a squad in to take out somebody like Osama bin Laden, or to take out the head of North Korea," Robertson said. "But isn't it better to do something like that, to take out Milosevic, to take out Saddam Hussein, rather than to spend billions and billions of dollars on a war that harms innocent civilians and destroys the infrastructure of a country? It would just seem so much more practical to have that flexibility."

Any evil act can be justified once you believe the voice in your head is God talking directly to you.

Inquisitors -- "godly" men all -- committed the most unspeakable acts in history under the guise of saving the victims' immortal souls.

I only hope that when karma catches up with Robertson, Falwell, and the rest of their ilk, that they are judged as harshly as they presume to judge others.

Notes: Dr. Pat claimed in his biography to have "seen combat in Korea. He was in Korea in uniform briefly, but his daddy the Congressman got his reassigned to Japan. 4. Indeed Rumguy, Indeed
And since some may wonder...

Jokerman

Standing on the water, casting your bread
While the eyes of the idol with the iron head are glowing
Distant ships sailing into the mist
You were born with a snake in both of your fists while a hurricane was blowing
Freedom just around the corner for you
But with truth so far off, what good will it do.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune
Bird fly high by the light of the moon
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

So swiftly the sun sets in the sky
You rise up and say goodbye to no one
Fools rush in where angels fear to tread
Both of their futures, so full of dread, you don't show one
Shedding off one more layer of skin
Keeping one step ahead of the persecutor within.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune
Bird fly high by the light of the moon
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

You're a man of the mountain, you can walk on the clouds
Manipulator of crowds, you're a dream twister
You're going to Sodom and Gomorrah
But what do you care ? Ain't nobody there would want marry your sister
Friend to the martyr, a friend to the woman of shame
You look into the fiery furnace, see the rich man without any name.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune
Bird fly high by the light of the moon
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

Well, the Book of Leviticus and Deuteronomy
The law of the jungle and the sea are your only teachers
In the smoke of the twilight on a milk-white steed
Michelangeo indeed could've carved out your features
Resting in the fields, far from the turbulent space
Half asleep near the stars with a small dog licking your face.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune
Bird fly high by the light of the moon
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

Well, the rifleman's stalking the sick and the lame
Preacherman seeks the same, who'll get there first is uncertain
Nightsticks and water cannons, tear gas, padlocks
Molotow cocktails and rocks behind every curtain
False-hearted judges dying in the webs that they spin
Only a matter of time 'til the night comes stepping in.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune
Bird fly high by the light of the moon
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

It's a shadowy world, skies are slippery gray
A woman just gave birth to a prince today and dressed him in scarlet
He'll put the priest in his pocket, put the blade to the heat
Take the motherless children off the street
And place them at the feet of a harlot
Oh, Jokerman, you know what he wants
Oh, Jokerman, you don't show any response.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune
Bird fly high by the light of the moon
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

9. "Neighborhood Bully" off that album seems prettty appropriate these days
Well, the neighborhood bully, he's just one man,
His enemies say he's on their land.
They got him outnumbered about a million to one,
He got no place to escape to, no place to run.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Man, what a great album. I'd been meaning to ask you if that's where you got your name.

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Dylan's songs seem more appropriate for the times now, than ever. Sometimes it's almost spooky.

Enthusiastic Recommendation:
If anyone reading this has not yet seen Bob Dylan's 2003 Film "Masked and Anonymous" -- it's a must! Brilliant. And dead on. As usual for Mr. Zimmerman.

15. I am sorry, but you are wrong.
Christians like these have been around forever and during many centuries throughout history they dominated and shaped the religion as it is practiced today.

The Dark Ages
The Spanish Inquisition
The Salem Witch Trials
The Crusades
Not to mention the more subtle ways that the churches have supported the social structures of our country i.e. segregation, keeping the little woman in the home, outrage over the appointment of a gay bishop.

12. not really but I know of a link
that is called www.bushrevealed.com

They talk about averything bad Bush is doing except for the war. They think/know Bush isn't as religious as he says he is. They say he support abortion and gay rights. They think skull & bones is satanic in origin and follow all of Bush's mingling with "false" religions. I think the guy who runs the discussion board is part of the Constitution party. I take a look over there every know and then but it's not worth posting about because they are extremely set in their ways. Most of the posters say they won't vote at all or they are going to vote Constitution party.

I think they think Islam is evil so they justify it in that respect. Everytime someone posts a link regarding 9/11 or anything anti- Iraq war it just gets ignored.

It's an extremist fundie site who doesn't like Bush because he isn't extremist enough for them, I think.

13. I Work With a Bunch of Them
They literally would like to torture anyone opposed to god's liberation of greater Israel, I mean Iraq. The more untenable their arguments become the more martial they become. It reminds me of the good christian Abbot that ordered his army of crusaders to "Kill them all and the Lord will know his own." This was after a crusader asked why they were killing everyone in a mostly christian town.

I've thought of doing that, but I can't bring myself to that kind of hypocracy. My name is probably on enough lists as it is.

That's funny -- and insightful.

Part of my concern is a scenario where it dawns on some of the more rabid among them that their leaders (using supposedly infallible biblical prophesy) have backed a losing horse.

These people have no sense of civil responsibility. They serve a supposedly higher law. I'm worried these crypto-fascist religionists will start trying to take matters into their own hands. Without shepherds to guide them they could devolve into loose cannons here at home.

(though living in Asia, I wouldn't know firsthand) Dubya still makes the right noises -- evildoers, Berg, kill, kill! -- and leaves it to his minions to float concessionary trial balloons (we'll leave if they ask). I can't see them abandoning the divinely blessed preznit, unless he let's his schtick go soft, like pulling out and embracing the horror of a non-bloody negotiated resolution.

I agree with you though, their frenzy will turn into some serious ugliness if Dubya's thwarted and they don't get raptured out of their trailers soon.

43. I wonder how these fools will react when their "End Times" don't come
when they want/need/expect them to come. Will there be a loud mass "wailing and gnashing of teeth"? Will the preachers, when questioned by their lost, dazed, and confused "sheep," stammer and sputter and foam at the mouth like the rabid dogs many of them are now? And so on, and so on, and so on....

I have some pretty wild fantasies about what will happen with the Fundies if Armageddon/the Rapture/End Times indeed does not come about, but my expressing such fantasies will probably get me kicked off DU, so we shall leave it at that. Peace.
