What's the latest word on Ronald Reagan ?

Someone mentioned a couple of days ago that they had been working on his obituary but that, that was "normal"? Nancy came out and more or less attacked Dubya's position on stem cell research, which would indicate that things may be pretty bad right now with the ex-President. Anybody heard anything more about him?

2. Still smarter than dumbya...

I've heard/read that most publications keep obits "in the can" for public figures- just in case. And Nancy, IIRC, has spoken out about the stem cell issue a few times since * signed the stupid thing in '91.

Other than that, he's in his 90's & suffering from Alzheimer's (as is his family, for which I'm honestly sympathetic). Odds are definitely against him.

3. I remember reading a piece on Nancy speaking somewhere...

just recently. She was calling for shrub to expand stem cell research. In her speech she made a reference that she can no longer reach her husband or something to that effect. There was a thread on it, sorry don't have a link.

5. Scary Thought Here

I have been enjoying Bush's plummeting poll numbers and, at the same time, concerned about "October Surprises." Without a doubt, it is now looking like there will be a less than stellar GOP turnout in November.

HOWEVER, could Reagan's passing be a rallying cry? I can hear the rhetoric now to "get out and win one for the Gipper!!"

Any thoughts?

9. I think you may be correct

I've said for a long time that Reagan is probably already dead, that he's been overdue. He's in his 90s and about five years beyond the usual span for someone with Alzheimer's. I'm sure he's the October surprise they have planned. However, they may have to spring it early as more and more information about Rumsfeld's prison interrogation techniques becomes available.

If by some miracle he's still alive, the poor old thing is being kept that way by a feeding tube.

I can think of no worse punishment.

Last I heard he's totally bedridden and doesn't recognize anyone. Nancy & Deaver have been saying how bad he is, but there's no death watch as yet.

I doubt the Bushes are looking forward to the funeral, except as a diversion, as they hate the Reagans and are paying them back for the way Nancy treated them while in the W.H. Maybe Nancy will forego a Washington funeral and opt for a private one, though I doubt it.

Your May 11 editorial "Republicans for Stem Cell Research" refers to Nancy Reagan's plea for increased research, based on her husband's tragic illness. If you notice, this reflects a pattern among conservatives. They do sometimes break away from the party line, but only when an issue affects them or their families personally.

After James Brady was shot, he and his wife strongly supported gun control. Colin L. Powell appreciates the benefits of affirmative action. Mr. Powell is also more cautious about waging war than his colleagues who have not experienced combat. Even a conservative can become pro-choice if a beloved wife or daughter is raped or in danger of dying in childbirth.

But the conservative imagination does not seem to encompass total strangers who may be homeless, jobless or desperate.

18. Writing the obituary is normal.

Most news organizations keep pre-written obituaries for public figures and famous people as boilerplate. Then, when the time comes, they can just type in age and cause of death.

99% of what's in an obituary isn't going to change, so they can have them pre-written. Most news organizations are probably just updating Ronnie's since Nancy is now speaking publicly that he's further gone.

BTW: I've lost family members to Alzheimers. I really, really feel for Nancy and the kids. They're going through hell. And even Ronnie doesn't deserve what that disease does to you.
