CNN reports on Republican reaction that Kerry might delay acceptance |
|
CNN reports on Republican reaction that Kerry might delay acceptance of nomination.
On CNN they just reported "Republicans" are saying it's unfair for Kerry to delay accepting the nomination because in 2000 Al Gore got to concentrate the matching funds with a convention 2 weeks after the Republican Convention. (The challenging party's conventions is before the incumbent party).
Firstly, 2 weeks (in 2000) is different than 5 weeks(in 2004).
Secondly, George W. Bush opted out of matching funds for the Primary in 2000, and was the first candidate since the Watergate-reforms to do so. This gave George W. Bush twice as much money to spend as Al Gore, who didn't opt out.

Whoever came up with the idea that Kerry might say "I will accept the nomination" instead of "I accept the nomination" is brilliant.
The suspense will mean MORE viewers.
That CNN report implied there will be less news coverage because of the BIG IF.
That's bunk. This will give the pundits more to talk about.

Kerry needs to introduce himself to Americans who aren't familiar with him as-soon-as-possible, and so the Democrats shouldn't delay the convention.

|
Edited on Sun May-23-04 01:33 PM by Eric J in MN
Having the Convention in July but not accepting the nomination immediately can be the best of both worlds.
Kerry needs to introduce himself to America soon, and that accomplishes it.
But if he says "I will accept the nomination" instead of "I accept" then he can raise money for 5 weeks AFTER more Americans know about him.

Let people tune to his Acceptance Speech to either hear
"I will accept the nomination."
or
"I accept the nomination."

They have every right to accept whenever they choose. I'd like it if he had a huge "ACCEPTANCE" event.
Regardless, I love it this news item p!ssed off the GOP hardliners.

of being a republican once for asking this question, but will try it again...
1. What stops Bush from doing the same thing? He delays his nomination for a week or two himself, re-cementing the gap.
2. He does so "reluctantly" stating how he is only doing it because "Kerry wont play by the rules". The Reps will play it up as Kerry trying to be sneaky and dishonest. Sure we as Dems wont buy it but some independents might.
I dunno, if it works, great, but seems to me a better tactic would be for the 527s to come full bore during that time frame and make up the money gap.

This is a good signal for the Karry camp to send--that they're not the 90 pound liberal weaklings the Thugs have been used to smacking around for the past 20 years. And that's a good thing.

seems to me the best way to plan is to assume that Bush will have solid support among republicans and right of center moderates...if he doesnt, great, but we should assume the worst case scenario.

32. But Bush doesn't have solid support right now. |
|
Did you see the spat between Hastert and McCain? Or the reaction of Congressional Repuglicans to the "pep talk"? Bush is in real trouble with his own people. (NoFacts even said the same on Face The Nation this morning.)
Kerry's willingness to smack the Republicans around with this little plan of his is "assuming the worst case scenario." I just hope they have more brilliant tidbits like this waiting in the wings for us. Yummy.

ought to get another candidate, since Bush had not accepted the nomination. I don't think the scenarios are exactly the same because Bush might have more people questioning his nomination to begin with. Also, I would bet that the Democrats could get a better bounce, money and enthusiasm, than the Repubs could....Just a thought. :)

30. Bush already delayed his nomination. |
|
He delayed his entire convention to the point where he is legally ineligible to be on the ballot in several states (though the Pukes in these states will no doubt lie, cheat, and steal to get his ass on the ballot). And while the obvious exploitation of 9-11 was their primary motivation for delaying the convention, it certainly had to cross their minds that this delay would give them a 5 week fundraising advantage over the Democrats. Obviously, they hadn't considered the strategy that Kerry is considering now, as nobody had ever tried it before.
As for my own feelings on the "strategy", I can see the wisdom in doing it, I just think it would have worked better for another candidate, as it's already being spun in the corporate media as "another Kerry waffle".

Cool.
