Maybe a sigh of resignation, a nod to the Sisyphusian nature of human progress, or the gritting of one's teeth, perhaps.

At least from a 'Left' perspective.

Granted, from many other perspectives, it was eight great years. Certainly in retrospect, I'd rather have him back in office than the dangerous idiot currently in the White House.

However, I can't say I was happy about what Clinton did to welfare, nor was I happy about many aspects of his crime bills. I became quite angry with him during the whole 'Communications Decency Act' business -- and the same with their 'Clipper Chip' initiative.

Clinton was a centrist who often tried to appear to be leaning Left, and the fact he was a Democrat made it all the more difficult to oppose one of his policies if you didn't agree with it from a Left-perspective.

So after that experience, which ended as something of a disappointment for me given the (admittedly unrealistic) hopes I had for his presidency in 1992, and after Dubya, I can't imagine that anyone on the 'Left' has much quaking left to do in their boots!

Yes, Clinton's terms ended with a bit of disappointment, but that's what we were grooming Gore for. Pisses me off even more about Florida, because Gore was the payoff for the compromises Clinton had to make.

As for Clinton being a centrist pretending to lean left, I think he was the opposite. I think he had to lean centrist to get anything done. He was aggresively leftist at first, but when the moderate Dems (and DINOs like Nunn) turned on him, then lost Congress, his job became more of an effort to fight off the rightwing onslaught than advance our cause. By the end he was just going along to get along, and trying to be as moderate as possible to help Gore get into office.

Then Nader traitor came along, and the Florida thiefs came along, and they stole the election from us, so we are back to square one, trying to install someone to pretend to be centrist long enough for us to move this nation back to the left.

I agree with you on Clinton's second term, though. It was not fulfilling. Having survived Reagan, though, it was still like being freed from prison, although in a land not of your own choosing.
