7. You got it!
We may, at least for a little while, add one Democrat to the House today. It's been unheard of in South Dakota to have both Senate seats and the Representative seat occupied by Democrats. It may very well indicate a change in political ideology in South Dakota. God I hope so.

That's Western South Dakota....out where I live....a hotbed of mouth breathing, knuckle dragging, fascist boobs...who habitually vote Republican but get more Welfare State funding than any other counties in the state.

26. Pennington is the biggest county in the state...and the second
most populated. Rapid City is the second largest city in SD at about 68,000. The counties total population come to about 90,856. How many will vote I can't say....though the vast majority are Republicans.

Minnehaha county is comparably small in land mass but has the largest population. Sioux Falls is located in this county. Minnehaha County has a population of 152,545...and has historically tended toward Democratic Candidates.

how come they can't predict this race after 5% of the votes are in, like all the others?

37. Because SD is a VERY weird place
People here are not slaves to their parties....unless we are talking presidential elections. Democrats have historically dominated Senatorial seats and Republicans the Representative seat. Always and I mean always they will vote Republican for president....overwhelmingly....even the Democrats. Democrats in SD are largely equivalent to Republicans in other states...Democratic candidates are as well. Republicans are equivalent to those openly fascist....as are their candidates.

How does it work in SD? Here in the South if someone doesn't get a certain % of the votes, they have to go through a runnoff to determine the winner. I know there's still about 90 precincts to be reportedm but it's very close!

I've been through so many of those things here, I forgot when there's only 2 on the ballot it doesn't matter.

I just checked again and Steph is still winning with 713 precincts reported. She has even picked up a little.

Do you have any idea, of those still unreported, if they are large voting areas, or are mostly Pub?

I know I don't live in SD, but I view this as yet another slam against the enemy, and I want very much for Steph to win!

Such a good call!

I don't know how to even tell which ones aren't but it's getting down to the last 25. Do you know anything about the voting history?

88. traditionally the last to be counted are rural/conservative
but that is in my state (Utah). I'm not in SD but I want a win going into November!

the race has been narrowing but it has been close all night, now there are only 9 not reporting.

90. Any Idea About Absentees
This is real, real close. Anyone know if the absentees were already counted in before all the other precincts, each precinct includes them in their final totals or they're added on afterwards. Could be the clincher.

Thanks!

93. I don't know....I doubt it would have much of an effect anyway
I don't believe there would be enough....then again we do have quite a few people in Iraq right now. Thing is I doubt most of them would be paying much attention to a special election.

95. Let's Keep It Out Of The 1,000 votes or less range
I hope you're right, just skeptical when things get close how ballots either appear or vanish at these wee hours.

I was curious on the voting laws. Also, how about recounts? I know in this state, Illinois, when an election of that size is under 1%, a recount is all but automatic.

Cheers!

And thanks to the fine folks in South Dakota. Stephanie will be a welcome addition in Washington.

96. Generally speaking politicos don't ask for recounts here
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 03:12 AM by RapidCreek
The person who looks like they're gonna lose just concededs. That said this is a rather unique situation. First the winner is a woman...and second all three congressional seats are now held by Democrats...which is a first in South Dakota.

Also the two precincts that are still out won't come close to making up the 3000 vote lead she has....so I think we can rest assured.

I have to say I am pleasently surprised by the outcome. I for once am proud of my fellow South Dakotans. They have elected, for the first time in our history, a woman to congress, and a Democrat at that. Stephanie is pro gun....she recieved a 100% rating from the NRA...she is also not much of an attack dog...but those two things aside, I think she will be a valuable asset to congress.
