I just had a wild idea... |
|
I was over at the NYT, reading about Mel Karmazin leaving Viacom, and it struck me:
What a perfect person to get involved at AirAmerica.
Hear me out: Karmazin is a pro's pro. He knows radio. He knows how to build radio. He undoubtedly can spot a trend way before mere mortals. He still burns to be a player. He has a financial pad like few others. He is hardly adverse to a challenge.
Undoubtedly, he has seen AA's book numbers. They are impressive by any measure, but they still have miles to go before they sleep. But still, they are numbers that are incredibly indicative of a trend in listenership. Something is moving out there, a market is largely untapped, with real and substantive potential. The numbers rarely lie.
Drobny should talk to him. Who knows? "The Zen Master" might say yes.

That he IS going to Disney?
I guess my essential thought is that they really need a creative and adventurous radio pro there, one who lives and breathes "challenge".
Not some buzzword-spouting clock puncher.

4. Howard Stern, who has know Mel personally for almost 20 years... |
|
...says that Mel will probably retire, since he now spends tons of time on his hobbies and is in a "good marriage." No doubt that Mel is wildly rich and probably doesn't have to work again, but if he took on an "advisory" role w/ AA, that would no doubt be a great thing!

when I heard he was leaving Viacom, my first thought was..."OK, what will happen to CBS?" The guy who's taking his place use to be at MTV. Will CBS still go after the administration like it has been doing? Did this happen to STOP CBS from going after the administration? Would the new guy have anything to do with that?
