Poll question: Whose integrity do you respect more: Hugo Chavez or his Opposition?
I think this is the real integrity question here.

1. Chavez of course
regardless of his faults.

The opposition are willing to hand over their country to an outside power (the US), and to sell their souls -- and fellow citizens, especially poor ones -- for wealth.

It is very interesting how people in the US, and the media of course, are so willing to focus on anything negative about Chavez, while ignoring not only the realities in Venezuela, but the much worse conditions and behavior of very close US allies in places like Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, etc.

2. The US doesn't want Venezuela to be like Kuwait where the standard
of living for every citizen is high. They don't want hat wealth making it into the pockets of "the great unwashed". They are happier to have the elitists control the wealth and media.

Also - the US, at all costs, will fight to NEVER allow there to be a strong Central/South American nation.

10. Of course not - for the simple reason
that there is only two places from which the US could suffer an invasion, and Canada ain't exactly militant.

I don't claim this is the only reason, of course, but I bet it prays on some people's minds...

12. Yeah and there's a reason why we have such a large military investment in
the country separating Venezuela from said attack point. That place of vulnerability, btw, who do you think they'd side with? The Bolivarian brown folk who speak their language or the Gringos? Riddle me that!

damn, I always knew I wasn't cool... :P

Maybe I just need a cool flight suit, and then I too can be a gringo.

16. What you need is a mini-defibrillator surgically implanted to keep your
cold dead heart slogging along after you should be long dead. Then you'll be properly gringafied!

4. Glad to be of service!
I expect some flak for posting since I criticized the poster of the Chavez/Carter poll, saying it was pointless, but I think that the REAL question needed to be asked.

These Chavez vs some prominent Democrat threads smack of 2 things: avoiding the REAL question of Chavez vs the Oligarchy and serving to make Democrats look bad. IMHOP

20. I really don't feel I know enough about Venezuela to answer
The caricatures I have received from reading articles tell me Chavez, but I have to admit to myself I really have no idea what is going on on the ground there. I do know there are powerful private interests who engineered a coup against Chavez and own most of the media outlets, and also they resent his trying to wrest the oil industry away from them, but I just don't know the whole story, I'm afraid. Chavez sounds great to me based on what I've read, but I wonder if I'm getting the whole picture? One confused vote for Chavez, anyway.

23. Which do you respect more, a random human being or his opposition?
You are comparing a person (Hugo Chavez) to... what exactly?

If you want to make a comparison, you need to compare equivalencies, for instance, the integrity of one person versus the integrity of one other person.

No one can compel you to make sense. Just as you have the ability to not respond substantively to criticism. No one can compel you to engage in an honest discussion.

32. Indeed
I didn't vote in your poll because I didn't know whose integrity it was I was supposed to compare to Chavez's.

I'm sure you remember that in that other thread, although I acknowledged your right to not vote in the poll, I also encouraged you to participate in the discussion. I think people with a variety of viewpoints, discussing their opinions without descending to personal attacks is a good thing, don't you?

Venezuela’s Most Challenging Moment Is Here

Press Release: Council on Hemispheric Affairs

Venezuela’s Most Challenging Moment Is Here
• Recall validation petition ends today as country heads for a count-down over whether a referendum vote will be announced on June 4.

• Venezuelan authorities continue to explore the role of Colombian right-wing paramilitary forces who Chávez claimed were training to overthrow him, and were in league with the middle-class anti-Chávez opposition.

• Chávez is close to finding out if avoiding the opposition-led recall referendum time bomb is within his reach to diffuse, and if he can stamp out the initiative along with critics’ charges that the alleged Colombian raid was a stunt to divert attention from the recall.

• The Venezuelan president claims that the U.S. had prior knowledge and involvement in the plotted attack from Colombia, which is in keeping with his pattern of coming forth with anti-U.S. allegations as well as Washington’s pattern of giving him sufficient reason to make such accusations.
