Who the super-rich give money to is not necessarily an indicator of their ideological bent. They like to hedge their bets.

9. Maybe it was on Salon (I just read it as well) |
|
The gist was a couple of things. 1) That Ried is more friendly on the gaming industry than the direction of the newer (neocon/theocon) repubilcans. 2) That Ried has raised to the most powerful position (number two in the dem senate as Senate Minority Whip) that any Nevadan Senator has ever reached - and that the consensus is that this is good for Nevada (not to mention the growing possibility that he would actually become the Majority Whip). 3) He is seen as a good politician - works well with others (though on the Hill he can be more of a pitbull than Daschle...) - in terms of other Nevadan politicians and in terms, I believe, of tendng to constituent interests.
Of interest - 1) I believe there was no mention of Yucca as a reason (I assumed it would be and was looking for it); 2) Nevada has more registered republicans than democrats and the divide may be growing... BUT STILL the power houses (eg big money) in the party was throwing their support behind Ried - and I believe that not only is R Senator's dad actively supporting Ried, I believe I read that the senator himself has said that he would not actively campaign against Ried.
The seat, that a year or so ago was discussed by Repubs as a possible takeover... has become a virtual lock for Ried. Due to republicans!

7. Harry meets minimum Repub requirements--he's anti-choice |
|
He has a very poor voting record on reproductive choice, which qualifies him for Repub support (it's all about the pelvic issues, folks): http://ontheissues.org/Social/Harry_Reid_Abortion.htm
