Poll question: Should Canada rid itself of the monarchy? |
|
For me, it's a massive yes, of course.

I enjoy seeing the queen on your money. And listening to CBC News refer to the Queen's land and Queen's Counsel, etc.

It's like having an official mascot. If we didn't have the Queen, I'd want our official head of state to be a guy in a plush beaver costume.

I'd like to see the beaver square off against a guy in a moose outfit. That's democracy.

-10. It is simply a holdover that is ceremonial and costs us a few bucks and to rid ourselves of it isn't worth the trouble to do it. It does no harm and ties us to our history so I voted No.

but I agree, you should keep it. Your ties to Britain keep you safe from the maniacs running our country. Without those ties, the B.F.E.E. might decide that you guys are a "threat to our freedom". Call me crazy, but I wouldn`t put anything past those stupid fuks.

they should get rid of that abomination known as Shaira law that they have allowed to creep into their supposedly secular country. That is a huge set back for womens rights there. It makes me sick.

17. I thought they already had... |
|
...didn't they have a new constitution a few years ago, and didn't they drop out of the commonwealth at the same time, and didn't they change July 1 from Dominion Day to Canada Day at the same time, and didn't they get rid of the governor general at the same time? Please tell me, I would really like to know. As a person who holds dual citizenship I am woefully ignorant of things Canadian. (Although compared to other Americans I am a genius about it.) And that Canadian citizenship thing? Maybe they took that away at the same time. It appears that my eligibilty to declare myself a citizen depends upon whether I am speaking to an English official or a French official. Maybe if I spoke with a French accent their opinions would change?

Canada's still in the commonwealth and still has the Gov. General (royal representative), but did indeed change Dominion Day to Canada Day.
As to your dual citizenship... that seems to depend on all kinds of odd and often shifty conditions. I'm a dual US/Canadian citizen, having been naturalized Canadian in 1994. Doing so didn't automatically lose me my US citizenship, but for many others in earlier times it did.
If your parents were of two different nationalities (US and Canadian), it can be very complicated... If you were born Candian but naturalized US, I'm not sure what the story is. It might well depend on when you were naturalized, etc.

I look forward to the day when the free citizens of the Canadian republic no longer need touch their forelocks to the talentless and decadent offspring of an obscure branch of the German nobility. Windsor, hell; they're Saxe-Coburgs and everyone knows it.

Equality of opportunity on a level playing field. That's the way to go. No inherited privilege.

don't invest head of government and head of state in the same person. That is how we got in so much trouble here with both Nixon and Bush.
