without the opportunities for education that I have had, that could easily be me. A prayer for her and hope for a voice. This is the problem with " welfare reform" sometimes the reform isn't much better than the welfare was. Although sometimes it is. Hope she has health care. It is disturbing that the working poor continue to increase - that should be reason enough to vote * out.

3. I think that John Kerry will do a fairly good job of it... |
|
The man has stated that he wants healthcare for all Americans, give every kid the opportunity to have a good education and go to college, make it so that people DONT have to work three jobs to make ends meet. Granted, I'll admit that he has focused more on the middle class than those who work for minimum wage who can't get a better job. Still, I would assume that under Kerry, the cuts to social services will be rolled back in the next budget.

4. Reading this article brought back memories of a "Burger King Mom" |

I encountered in graduate school.
There is a Burger King right on the edge of the Florida State University campus, and it is also across the street from the apartment complex in which I lived during my last four years of grad school. There was a woman working at this Burger King, a single mom with twin boys -- who should be around 11 or 12 years old now. The mother worked a 6-8 hour shift while the boys were at school. When the boys got out of school at 3, they came straight to the restaurant on the city bus. They would sit in one of the booths and do their homework. Meanwhile, between orders, their mom would check their homework. Furthermore, this woman was determined not to spend the rest of her working life making burgers, as she -- along with one of the managers -- was taking classes at the local community college.
This woman left BK -- or at least was transferred to another store -- shortly before I got my degree in 2002. Either way, I did not see her or the twins the last 2 or 3 months I was in Tallahassee. Wherever they are now, I wish them well.:)
