Slate's Fred Kaplan: Risk of Bush Collapse Is Soaring
Bye, George
It's been a bad week for the Bushies.
By Fred Kaplan
Posted Thursday, June 3, 2004, at 2:35 PM PT

How did he last this long?

The walls haven't collapsed around George W. Bush, but the pillars are buckling, the floorboards are rattling, the inspectors are probing, and it doesn't look good.

In the White House and the Pentagon, senior officials face the prospect of criminal charges. The vice president is accused of malfeasance, at best. A key erstwhile ally in the war on terrorism has apparently turned against us in an act of criminal perfidy. And now the nation's spymaster has turned in his cloak—it's not yet clear whether he jumped or got pushed; either way, Bush's risk-rating has just soared.

1. My dad said he was on a site this week where
the author claimed that Powell is one of the next to resign, and that he had joined forces in trying to assassinate the Prez and half of the administration.

I would say that if there is even an ounce of truth to that, then yeah the pillars are buckling, to say the least.

6. The economy looks better, and they might be able to keep the lid on Iraq
for just enough time to skew it positively.

These guys HAVE to win, don't ever count them out. Tenet will be blamed for everything, and Democrats hate America.

I'm not very comfortable about the situation at all; much as I hate this administration, and much as most of them are second-rate, they may well pull it off, and if they do, we're in for a very dark time.

7. And...
They've got fully half of the population willing to swallow whatever truth-is-lies swill they feed them. John Kerry is "anti-american" and a "wimp" because he fought in vietnam. Bush is a patriotic regul'r guy hard-ass because he sat out the war in Texas and Alabama with help from Daddy's friends.

There are plenty of "same planet, different world" folks who will no doubt vote for the nimrod come hell AND high water.

I'm guardedly optimistic, but I still don't see any way for this not to be a close election.
