Drudge says Reagan's about to buy the farm
Hollywood sources tell LA Weekly columnist Nikki Finke that former President Ronald Reagan's medical condition has suddenly worsened. "He really took a downslide today," the insider told Finke Friday evening. "Doctors are at the house. Things aren't good." At the start of the day, several news organizations chased down a rumor that the ex-president had died, but it wasn't true... Family members gathered at the Reagan's Bel Air home late Friday... Developing...

The Deification of St Ronnie will proceed, conveniently timed to boost Junior's numbers, and provide unlimited worshipping at their convention.

These fuckwads are too predictable anymore

2. They are...
I find it disgusting the Bush is going to exploit this to it's fullest too....I mean, I don't really like Reagan at all, but then again as I've said before tonight in LBN I don't look forward to comforting a Republican friend of mine over his death...

27. Considering most of my friends don't know who Reagan is...
...(their 14 and unfortunately i've learned not to expect much) and I have a Republican friend who idolizes him, I didn't say just Republicans care. I'll care. Many Democrats will care. My friend was just a good example because as I stated before, my other friends don't know.

Let us show a Republican the respect they will never show us.
It is only important what we do.

11. My problem isn't with the empty shell of a man who used to be Reagan.
..Hell, certainly not with his family. Nancy hates the Bushes and Ronnie Jr and Patti are liberals as far as I know. Plus I lost a grandfather to Alzheimers, so I'd never wish it on anyone, even one as evil as Reagan.

My point is that the Bush Criminal Empire and the GOP have got to be damn near orgasmic that this is happenning now. Junior's house of cards is falling fast, and what better distraction than national mourning for the false messiah of neo-fascism, St Ronnie Reagan??

Hell, I might buy a pound of Jelly Bellies in his honor, and then proceed to counteract the deification.

Only republicans will care. Reagan disappeared 16 years ago. Fancy Nancy will never let the BFEE profit from his death.

33. We're all Americans - do I have a choice?
I was born north of the Rio Bravo, and south of the 48th parallel, so I am by default an American citizen. It means very little to me - I'm south of the 48th parallel and am American, a carpenter in Ottawa is Canadian, it doesn't really mean much to me.

Also, due to my circumstances of birth, I am a wage worker, a wage slave. Unlike the other identity thrust on me, I am proud to be a worker as opposed to idle class heirs like Paris Hilton. But I am not proud of being a wage slave, and would like to see the system of wgae slavery ended. But I am proud of being a worker. Some people look to soldiers to honor them for defending freedom, supposedly, in Iraq, Korea, Vietnam. I myself honor the Haymarket martyrs who died for the eight hour day. Those are my heroes, those are the people who fought for me, those are the people I honor.

I was also baptized into a Christian church at birth, but unlike my wage slave and American status, this at least I had an option of dumping and promptly did as soon as I was able to.

That there is a flag that is supposed to divide the people living above the Rio Bravo and South of 48th parallel from the people living North and South of it seems more a pity than a source of pride. I feel more solidarity with a worker like me in Saskatchewan than Americans like Paris Hilton.

Ronald Reagan was a two-bit actor who was a shill for General Electric and big business from the 1950's until his current drooling on his death bed. I consider him more of an enemy than Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and people I have no quarrel with, and will be glad to see him go.

12. sigh
Every time something happens in the world, a contingency of DU'ers are quick to point out that it somehow helps Bush, and either directly or by implication, say that Bush is behind it.

This is NOT timed well to help Bush. If Reagan dies this weekend, his funeral will be a distant memory by November.

The fact is, he's very very old and has been very very sick for a very very long time. People tend to die under those circumstances.

As for the people who are gloating and cheering, fuck you all. This man and his family have suffered immensely. I never liked him. I never voted for him. I disagreed with him on every fundamental issue. I think he was a lousy president.

But now he's a sick old man. What good is politics if we lose our humanity over it?

Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 01:32 AM by Hippo_Tron
Not to mention that Democrats tend to embrace the Ronnie years as the GOP before it was corrupted. They can try to exploit it but it won't work. In the mean time, I feel sorry for the family. As much as I disagree with Ronnie's political beliefs the Reagans are good people and frankly, nobody deserves to spend the last years of their life with Allzheimers.

18. Not everything in the world is part of a plot by omnipotent conspirators
People, including celebraties and ex-presidents, sometimes (even often) die without being murdered for political advantage. Shit happens, even to brain dead cons. As for your suspicion that this is the much discussed "October Surprise," the timing is a bit off, don't you think?

23. Ah, so many want life to be so simple (minded)
Bad Things (like death or sadism) must be caused by Bad Men. "Evildoers" is the preferred phrase for most of the simpletons. "Evil Spirits" was the older variant. "Satan" maybe. Or "The Great Satan." It is a shame to see this idiocy reflected here.

22. I'm ashamed of some of the somments in this thread.
I would expect this kind of juck from Rush or Hannity or Boortz, but I honestly thought the people on DU were better than that.

I didn't like him as a President either, and I always thought Nancy was too much of a controler, but he's been out of office for many years, and has been very sick for a long time. Although I'm sure hse had a lot of help, it's got to be extremely hard to have your husband deteriorate like that for years. I sure don't know that I could handle it. I respect Nancy for that.

Give it a rest folks. It make YOU LOOK BAD!

Some here say they had him frozen in ice waiting for Bush's poll numbers to drop.

That's a cynical way to look at things.

Well, I like his wife so my condolences to her.

for the "great man."
I'm sorry, but he was complicit in Iran-Contra and got off with barely a wrist-slap--and for that I will despise him and his murderous scum ilk beyond the grave. Just because someone dies I do not have to suddenly respect him. The world is better off without him.

30. Nancy Reagan Is Independent Enough That
she might surprise us all. Not that she would shun Bush, but she might not let him "benefit" from Ron's death.

Remember, she has recently nixed the RR University in Colorado and publicly spoken out about stem cell research.

32. I am betting they announce he is dead on D-Day
Then we can have a huge tie in of national mourning and celebration of the military that RR single handedly ressurrected to defeat communism. It gets the sheep all comfortable with the things they like the most... killing brown people, blind patriotism, and hero worship.

The assholes will probably rename D-Day to Reagan Day.
