I need some good Reagan quotes |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 09:38 AM by ih8thegop
When he goes, I want to use a quote from him in my sig line.
A few I've found:
A leader, once convinced a particular course of action is the right one, must have the determination to stick with it and be undaunted when the going gets rough.
The challenge of statesmanship is to have the vision to dream of a better, safer world and the courage, persistence, and patience to turn that dream into reality.
...there is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn't mind who gets the credit.
I know it's hard when you're up to your armpits in alligators to remember you came here to drain the swamp.

No matter what you think of Reagan - I think that Americans can all agree - we shall be forever in his debt.

We shall forever be in his debt. His spending debt. We shall never be able to repay the debt he ran up as President. Neither will our kids.

14. Here's a Reagan quote for both of you, from his 1st inaugural address |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 10:30 AM by lebkuchen
'81
"For decades we have piled deficit upon deficit, mortgaging our future and our children's future for the temporary conveniennce of the present. To continue that long trend is to guarantee tremendous social, cultural, political, and economic upheavals."
This is a quote from his second inaugural address:
'85
"An almost unbroken 50 years of deficit spending has finally brought us to a time of reckoning."
and here he is on Feb. 18, '81:
"We may in spite of our best efforts see a national debt in excess of a trillion dollars." (of course, he ended up tripling that amount soon enough all by himself)

5. No, you've got it wrong |

Thanks to Reagan, we shall forever be IN DEBT. Thanks to him, our National Debt started spiraling out of control. A whole series of laws was set in place to prevent his gross mismanagement of money from occurring again.

It's not really a quote, but it was pretty appalling at the time. (We didn't know he had alzheimers, only that he was detatched and clueless. Albeit, nothing like the present day!!!)
Anyway, Raygun was sitting at a table with Nancy and a reporter asked him something about Ortega and Nicaragua. He responded with a blank look, which went on long enough for people to start shifting in discomfort. Then Nancy leaned subtlely into him and whispered out of the side of her mouth: "Tell them we're doing everything we can."
Just at that moment, Ronnie brightened and answered: "We're doing everything we can."
I tell you no lie, it was on ABC or CBS, I think--because in 85 that's all there was. I remember freaking out, and my friends freaking out and and discussions about how far we have fallen as a nation to allow this little puppet figurehead to hold our highest office, and next to him, Nixon looks like a statesman, blah, blah, blah.
If we had know what was to come 2 decades later, I woulda moved back to Europe then and there!

3. here's a few more; the "credit" and "swamp" ones are not his best I know |
|
I have wondered at times what the Ten Commandments would have looked like if Moses had run them through the U.S. Congress. --Ronald Reagan
Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. --Ronald Reagan
Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom, and then lost it, have never known it again. --Ronald Reagan
The United States remains the last best hope for a mankind plagued by tyranny and deprivation. America is no stronger than its people - and that means you and me. Well, I believe in you, and I believe that if we work together then one day we will say, ``We fought the good fight. We finished the race We kept the faith.'' And to our children and our children's children we can say, ``We did all that could be done in the brief time that was given to us here on earth --Ronald Reagan
Our forbearance should never be misunderstood. Our reluctance for conflict should not be misjudged as a failure of will. When action is required to preserve our national security, we will act. --Ronald Reagan
Why should we be frightened? No people who have ever lived on this earth have fought harder, paid a higher price for freedom, or done more to advance the dignity of man than the living Americans, those Americans living in this land today. --Ronald Reagan
I'm convinced more than ever that man finds liberation only when he binds himself to God and commits himself to his fellow man. --Ronald Reagan

10. Heard in one of Reagan's radio addresses.... |
|
Ladies & Gentlemen, I have just signed legislation which outlaws the Soviet Union forever. We begin bombing in 5 minutes....
Jellybeanbrain apparently thought he was "testing" a microphone, and didn't realize he was ON THE AIR. Luckily, the Russians weren't feeling trigger happy that morning. :nuke:

12. We are leaving Lebanon |
|
The best thing I ever heard him say was that the US military was leaving Lebanon.
To those who think leaving Iraq is a bad idea, just look at Lebanon. Since we left them alone, they've returned to peace.

I remember when he visited Ottawa, the Canadian capitol, after he became president....There were some protestors on Parliament Hill with signs about Acid Rain....I don't remember his exact quote, but I do remember how we all laughed up here at his claim that acid rain was caused by TREES!!......:D

16. Here's RR on ABC News in '84 |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 10:41 AM by lebkuchen
"One problem...we've had, even in the best of times...is the people who are sleeping on the grates, the homeless who are homeless, you might say, by choice."
RR quoted 10/28/80 in the NY Times on the development of nuclear weaons by foreign countries, already either showing signs of alzheimers or a complete lack of understanding of the issues:
"I just don't think it's any of our business."
An hour later RR says he supports US attempts to stop nuclear proliferation.
RR in 2/11/86 of Philippine elections:
"Fraud...could have been...occurring on both sides." Corazon Aquino replies (2/25/86) that she questions "the motives of a friend of democracy who chose to conspire with Mr. Marcos to cheat the Filipino people of their liberation.
RR in '83
"I know this thing about our tax program being for the rich. I've never been able to figure that out."
RR on 2/24/87
"Try as I might, I cannot recall anything whatsoever about whether I approved an Israeli sale in advance, or whether I approved replenishment of Israeli stocks around August of 1985. My answer, therefore, and the simple truth is, I don't remember--period."
RR in '85 on the Nicaraguan contras:
"They are the moral equal of our Founding Fathers and the brave men and women of the French Resistance."

17. Early quote, to Congress |
|
REAGAN: Sir, I detest, I abhor their philosophy, but I detest more than that their tactics, which are those of the fifth column, and are dishonest, but at the same time I never as a citizen want to see our country become urged, by either fear or resentment of this group, that we ever compromise with any of our democratic principles through that fear or resentment. I still think that democracy can do it.
Here we have a direct contradiction of the course the current pResident is on. Fear of a certain group (Muslims) is the guiding light being used to urge Americans to compromise our democratic principles. I too, Mr. Raygun, never as a citizen want to see our country become urged to compromise our democratic principles. But it is happening today, by your followers using your name. No wonder you're ill, what you saw happening made you sick.
I still think democracy can do it. But first we must be rid of the reaganites.
