Will Reagan's passing effect the election ? |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 10:15 AM by NicRic
(name spell correction) I predicted over a year ago that Reagan may pass away B/4 the election . Giving us days of pro republician press ,as all the talking heads on TV go on and on about Reagans Presendency, and what a great man he was ! Will this have any effect on the election , and if yes ,then why. I dont understand why anythnig to do with Regan ,should or would benifit the current idiot in office ! All input appreciated !

2. It is Reagan, isn't it, not Regan (Regan was one of his minions, fired by |
|
Nancy). But If he dies now, there is too much time before the election to affect the election directly. That is my opinion, for all it is worth.

21. I agree, and it's all relative, since Bushco II makes Reagan look like |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 11:01 AM by demo@midlife
small potatoes in comparison. Sometime in the 1950's he became a corporate shill (remember it was either GE or Westinghouse that he did lots of commercials for) after listening to all the talk from behind the scenes in corporate USA. And in many ways it's a terrible legacy he left because of the rethugs who followed him. Hwas really more moderate than lots of them, and they won't acknowledge that. But the real tragedy is that he ever turned to the right, because he had the political talent to be one of the best Democratic presidents ever. Can you imagine???
From 1980-1988 I woke up every day saying, "I can't believe Ronald Reagan was elected president." I thought it was bad THEN! Now I wake up and say, "I can't believe GWB was selected pResident, and now we're REALLY headed for disaster." So 20 years later, is the chimp any wiser? What's his excuse for what he's done and continues to do?
Anyway, out of respect for Reagan's immediate family, I too give them credit for being more decent than the BFEE and, as you said, speaking out about stem cell research. Yes, it's deplorable that people like that don't change their views until it hits them personally, but several times recently at least they haven't let Bushco get the upper hand.
Anyway, I think Ron Reagan is a hoot and since at least 2000 he has been publicly helping out the Democrats by critiquing the Chimpy & the neocons. And he's been able to do that with a good amount of objectivity and without getting personal.
That's my $.02...

There has been a generation pass since he abused the power, and there is a new generation of voters that have more than sentimental hogwash at stake. Loving st. ronnie is not going to pay the bills, find a job, keep your home from being reposessed.

including the evening news, CBS, NBC, ABC. After the funeral(1 week), we can start watching the evening news again. I would stay away from the Cable "news" until the election passes.
Also, I agree that only the FReeper Volken are the one's that will get all wishy washy over this. Voters today will be more concerned about who is currently occupying the White House.

|
for anything to pull these folks out of the hole they have excavated for themselves. For me there is a time line and a strong demarcation at the point where I was worried that Reagan might have some effect on this election. As far as I am concerned we are past that point. I don't think that Nancy will totally diss the Bush family but I think she is sharp enough to do whatever she has to do and stay within the boundaries of what she WANTS to do regarding the BFEE.

23. It could actually hurt Bush. Here's how: I've heard a few Dems say, |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 11:22 AM by AP
essentially, "this isn't your father's GOP any longer."
They point out that Bush isn't interested in smaller government and fiscal responsibility.
Granted, it can be argued that Reagan wasn't either, but it was that sentiment that Reagan rode into the WH.
So, when Reagan's gone, many Republicans might feel that another connection with the past has been lost and that Bush II is taking them farther and farther from their roots.
Many Republicans will lose an anchor and might drift over to the Democartic side (because they're talking about fiscal government, and Clinton did believe in smaller government).
As for moderates, I just don't see a lot of people getting nostalgic about the 80s because Reagan's gone. People are still nostalgic about the 70s and think of the 80s as a bad time. Reagan is going to force people to reflect on a decade they're still not all that enthusiastic about. I think 80s notalgia is still another year or two away.

Affect (the word you're looking for), who knows? I doubt if there will be that much transference from Reagan to Bonzo Jr. So my take is: highly unlikely or rare.

26. One would think it should, but it's a two edged sword |
|
Reagan is (rightly or wrongly) credited with defeating the Soviet Union, the "Evil Empire". He will be canonized as a symbol of strength and righteousness.
It's a natural for them to portray the chimp as a continuation of the good vs evil theme.
RoveCo. will certainly try to hitch the chimp's wagon to Reagan, in the hope of solidifying their base and winning over any (so called) Reagan Democrats.
But the Democrats could also use the comparison against the chimp by showing video of Reagan's resolve i.e.("...tear down this wall) vs any number of clips showing the chimp's inarticulate incompetence.
In a debate, a tried and true counter for Kerry would be "I KNEW Ronald Reagan, and YOU are no Ronald Reagan".
It cuts both ways - we'll see.
