US Citizens Revolting Against Paperless Voting
"MONTREAL- Carroll County officials in the U.S. state of Ohio opted this week not to buy an electronic voting machine in time for November's presidential election, and Dan Kozminski says his group should get some of the credit for that decision.

Kozminski's Citizens' Alliance for Secure Elections (CASE) is one of many campaigns -- local and national -- created specifically to push governments to ensure that if they jump on the electronic voting bandwagon, they must first guarantee that the new mechanism will include a "paper trail" for every vote.

"Many of our members have attended boards of election meetings. We have faxed them, we have e-mailed them many times, and sent out regular mail. We have been working with VerifiedVoting.org and the Electronic Frontier Foundation to encourage their members in Ohio to call their boards of elections to ask them please not to go forward," says the CASE activist from Cleveland, Ohio.

Across the United States, "the land of the free" and long a shining example of democracy to people worldwide, groups and movements have sprung up in recent months fighting to ensure that everyone who is entitled is able to vote on Nov. 3 and that those ballots are fairly counted."

1. Did you notice they got the election date wrong?
I followed your link to the article and sent them this e-mail:

Dear Common Dreams:

In your article "U.S. Citizens Revolting Against Paperless Voting" posted on your Internet site on June 5, 2004, the following paragraph had the wrong date for the November election:

<< Across the United States, "the land of the free" and long a shining example of democracy to people worldwide, groups and movements have sprung up in recent months fighting to ensure that everyone who is entitled is able to vote on Nov. 3 and that those ballots are fairly counted. >>

The election is on Nov. 2, not Nov. 3. I remember hearing during the 2002 election campaign that some unscrupulous Republicans were going around in heavily Democratic minority neighborhoods posing as get-out-the-vote activists urging everybody to vote ... on a date that was a few days AFTER the election was actually going to be held. They were obviously trying to keep Democrats from voting at all. I know that's not what you're trying to do, but it still is going to have that effect if you inadvertently start getting it into the public consciousness that the election is going to be held a day after it's actually going to be held. So please try to get this date right.

Thank you very much for all you're doing to promote progressive causes.

Ron

3. How to Help CASE Ohio
http://www.caseohio.org/CaseOhio/contribute.htm

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has agreed to accept donations to fund an Ohio lawsuit. There are two ways to donate:

1. By credit card - visit the EFF secure web site, complete the form and select the "Submit Information" button at the bottom. On the page where you enter your credit card or Pay Pal account number there is a comment box at the bottom (right above the "Submit Donation" button) with the heading "Your most important reason for joining EFF...". You are not joining EFF with this donation so IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO COMPLETE THIS TEXT BOX WITH THE PHRASE:
"OHIO E-VOTING LITIGATION."

If this field is not completed with this phrase the funds will not be allocated to Ohio E-voting Litigation.
