A serious question about the "war on terrorism"....
http://dailynews.att.net/cgi-bin/news?e=pri&dt=040605&cat=news&st=newsd83100n00&src=ap

<snip>
Bush compared the fight against terrorism "to the struggle we had with communism after World War II," a confrontation that united Europe.
===================================================================

So my question is, does the "war on terrorism" compare in any way to the struggle with communism or the defeat of Nazism? If I thought we were fighting an enemy as dangerous and strong as Nazism, I would be right in line in support of the war. But, as I read history, Hitler had the "blitzkrieg" and the Luftwaffe and was the strongest military threat in the world. He invaded and took over counries with brute force.

What weapons do the terrorists have? How many countries are threatened by them? I do not discount the individual threat of terrorists or even the threat from a small group of terrorists - as happened with 9/11. However, I do not see the breakdown in security by the US airlines and the US government as a "dire threat to the world"...Can someone convince me otherwise?

2. It is comparable to the War on Drugs.
Unwinnable. How do you wage war on a method? Smirky is like Barney Fife saying he's going to have a war on thieves and eliminate all of them.

3. You are correct...
I served in the USAF at alert sites in Alaska 1976-78, and everyone KNEW the Cold War was crap. We KNEW that Russian military equipment was junk. No one felt threatened...

Our F-4E's intercepted Russian aircraft at a rate varying from 2 to 10 a DAY, and it was all a big joke. The Russians would send 50's vintage planes into our airspace just to get our big bad fighters to scramble, then they'd lumber back across the border long before our guys got there...

On Xmas Day 1976, I watched a Red Yak-22 circle our base for 10 minutes while our planes sat at the end of the runway unable to takeoff because this big old chunk of 50's junk had about 2 tons of electronics jamming gear inside it. It fried EVERYTHING... Then it hit afterburners and bugged out...

We were more amused than afraid of a fight...

4. It's comparable to WWII in a way.
In both cases, the "enemy" was funded into existence by the Bush Criminal Empire.
