5. 14th to vote - terrible |
|
...what can I say, Reagan was for the rich and privileged in this country. He set the tone for the GOP that we have today and if I'm not mistaken, were there not more indictments and felony convictions among Reagan's administration members and advisers than any other presidency in U.S. history?

I'm not engaging in the orgy of grave dancing that's going on today, but if it's a serious question, I thought his policies were terrible. However, I now see that I had no idea how bad things could get. I don't honestly think that what's going on now is what he was going for.

7. History will judge Reagan harshly |
|
Three decisions by Ronald Reagan will loom increasingly large in the coming years.
Ronald Reagan armed the Afghan mujahadeen, pulled the marines from beirut after a terrorist attack, and willingly negotiated with terrorists to free American hostages.
In the conflunence of those 3 decisions lies the origin of 9-11 and the resulting madness that is corroding the very fabric of American society.

15. And the highly regressive tax scheme (ERTA and TEFRA et al) |
|
had most middle income Americans sending more of their marginal dollars to Uncle Sam than did the most wealthy thereby creating budget deficits and national debt that dwarfed those of all preceding presidents.

He was an actor, playing the role of his life. Reading speehes given to him, consoling the public with his charisma while his henchmen did the dirty work behind the scenes.

10. He was a charismatic version of Bush II. |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 08:00 PM by The Backlash Cometh
I really do believe he understood he blew it with the Iran-Contra thing. Mostly, I remember someone who was always trying to hide behind executive privilege; who took away medical assistance from people who needed it; who dragged his feet during the AIDS crisis; and who took more credit for the Cold War than he deserved. I believe Phil Donahue's inter-continental talk shows with Russian & American audiences did a better job of bringing the two countries together than anything Ronald did. Then, again, the fact that the Soviet Union was going bankrupt was a little bit of intelligence that the CIA failed to tell us. Or maybe they knew, but let Reagan build a reputation for himself over something that would have happened anyway.
But, yes, he was charismatic. I even got suckered in. I defended him when the Democrats wanted to impeach him over Iran-Contra. He had two years to go in his second term and I felt immensely sorry for him. I figured he took a bullet and we should allow him to finish his term. I realize now, that I was wrong. If we had thrown the book at his entire administration for Iran-Contra, maybe these neo-cons wouldn't have had the power they had to unravel our country during Bush II's term?

There have been far worse.
I think Reagan's policies were bad, but they weren't nearly as bad as Harding's, Coolidge's, Bush fils's...

12. A horrible president, |
|
like the idiot we have in the White house now, he was manipulated by the same types of criminals that are ruining the country today, he basically read teleprompters and did as he was told, his mind was going when his first term started. They propped that old man up for eight years, just like they are doing with the mindless twit we have now, and we are letting them.

Apparently they are only voting, not posting.
I actually can't think of even one good thing he ever did. I can't even think of anything that had a little bit of positive about it mixed in with all the negative.

17. What people say is he made people FEEL good. |
|
It was all fantasy. He made people FEEL good. He made them FEEL prosperous on borrowed money, and we're still burdened with that debt. He made them FEEL he or "we" defeated communism, as if his "tear down this wall" line is what made it happen.
Remember the 80's song "Don't Worry, Be Happy?" I think that's the theme song for the Reagan/Bush years. Just ignore reality, do a good acting job, and FEEL good.
