About the Reagan bashing threads. Let's stop for now. |
|
I have to admit I haven't had much nice to say about him either, however, I think in the spirit of decency, we should put a moratorium on the Reagan bashing until after the funeral. Then maybe we can start a Reagan legacy thread, both the good and the bad, but until then we should stop.

4. No one is infringing on your free speech. My suggestion is |
|
to put off the criticism until after the man is buried. It's the decent thing to do. You would want it for Clinton, wouldn't you?

10. That's the whole point where we disagree |

"Decency" is the principal victim of people like the dead guy.
I don't give back what I haven't received in the first place. He deserves my profound contempt - expressed loudly and colorfully.
Anytime. Especially at a moment when media are having an orgasm over the sainthood and greatness of a genocidal criminal.
Denouncing that is not only the really decent thing to do, it is a truly honest thing to do.

In spite of your good intentions, they're continually raping the country. And the rest of the world.
Relentlessly.
No fear, no pity - no pause.

No one is stopping you from saying anything you want. People questioning the timeliness and taste of said comments is not censorship.

all of the concerns are in direct reaction to some of the more colorful expressions of freedom of speech that have been appearing.
Or does it only work one way. One can say anything - regardless of content - but NO ONE can say anything in response... the responders in effect... have no free speech! :eyes:

9. I believe that tonight has proved that taste and civility... |
|
...are thankfully alive in many quarters.
Believe you me, I'll be ready to let loose after the funeral - on both Reagan and the neocons who will seize every opportunity to exploit his death for their own political agenda - but for now, please show some respect for his family.

It's not forever, just until the man is buried. You have to respect the family, some of who are Democrats that have spoken for our side.

22. No censoring... just showing WE are the party of Compassion, Integrity, |
|
and Tolerance. If you think about it, holding back a little this week could be viewed as a strategic move-- a pragmatic move-- since it would allow those fence-sitting independents and moderate Repugs take in the Reagan coverage and to make their own unfavorable comparisons with Bush*. If the media reports instead on negative attitudes by many towards REAGAN-- even in death-- that will be the story (and the unwelcome distraction).

|
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 08:33 PM by hlthe2b
and we could let it go-- Then Limbaugh and Hannity won't have great quotes for Monday...On the otherhand, they'd probably just make some up anyway.
But, maybe we can remember KARMA-- we want plenty of the good kind come November, folks! So, reign it in, ok?
I pledge here and now: no Reagan bashing or snide remarks throughout next week.

14. Why? Does Rove stop? NO. That is why we will never win... |
|
We have to *be* on their level in order to win, and *eliminate* their reign of terror. Being 'nice' gets us four more years of the Idiot Usurper. President Gore was 'nice' and conceded an election that he won. Now, *who* did that help? That's right, Halliburton, etc., not us.

17. Plenty of time for that after next week and I am not saying to hold back.. |
|
While I'm with you on the cost of Gore being statesman-like against those who follow no rules, I don't think a week of letting the Reagan memorials run its course will be detrimental. I have seen some pretty amazingly balanced coverage thus far from ABC and CBS-- including the whole Iran Contra debaucle, the massive deficits and ever increasing government, and undeniable antagonism between the bush-reagans.... Now if they try to draw ridiculous favorable comparisons with Bush* as a leader, then all bets are off.
But, Bush* needs to remain our focus-- not a dead man, IMO.

As much as I do believe you, I am afraid to watch. I might throw something at the TV the first time "REAGAN IS GOD!" comes out of somebody's mouth.
I have been boycotting network and cable TV news for some time now. I just don't need the lies and propaganda and other bad energy. Peace.

23. I know how you feel and I no longer have access to cable news for that |

reason. My threshold for inappropriate idolatry is certainly higher for a dead man--one who could at least get a coherent word out of his mouth-- than our current jerk-in-chief. Strategically, I think it makes sense to let others make their own unfavorable conclusions with the Bush*-Reagan comparisons, which I think will happen, if we don't distract by giving the media stories on Left-Wing hatred towards Reagan.
Maybe it is because he is dead, maybe because he has been truly dead for 10 years, maybe because for all his faults, the guy was articulate and not comparatively stupid (and I so yearn for that, but I can hold back my feelings towards Reagan for a week and continue focus on Bush* After all, Reagan is not running in November, right?

you can keep this shit to yourself for a little while, you know what i mean? just because you have the right and the ability to say something, doesn't mean you have to run your mouth right away. i think waiting until after the funeral is a pretty good idea. there have been countless times where i've kept something to myself instead of posting about it on an internet forum for the entire world to see.
edit: a really bad grammar mistake, ouch.

19. The only way the DEATH of Reagan is a political event... |
|
is if Kerry or some other mainstream Democrat makes or can be framed to have made a disparaging remark about his passing. And if that fails, second choice will be remarks published on chat boards, but that will be pretty weak.

I remember when my Grandfather died, people from all over the town came to say what a great person he was. I know not everyone is so fortunate. Had my Grandfather not been so nice I would not want all his sins pointed out right after he died.
Empathy is something to be proud of. Because the other side doesn't have it, doesn't mean we should give it up.
