Anyone else just see "Judgment at Nuremburg" on TCM? |
|
I've seen the film before, years ago. And I've been aware of the similarities between Nazi Germany and today's U.S. But seeing this movie, at this time, was really amazing. I recommend everyone rent or buy this and watch it, whether for the first time, or just with the new "eyes" of the current era.
There's the German war criminal with the guilty conscience saying basically, "We thought it was for our country. We thought it didn't matter if some minorities lost their rights, we thought it wouldn't continue..." There's the judge saying, "We cannot defeat our enemy by becoming like them..." There's the German lawyer outraged that images of the truth were shown in all their horror, as if it's the showing of them that's the outrage.
Just see it again.

but got vetoed by my wife & son, who argued that I wasn't even watching (I was also on the 'puter) and besides - horrors! - it's in black & white!
I've seen it before, however - a couple of times. Definitely some riveting performances AND some truths that apply today. Most notable among these truths: 'just following orders' does not absolve individual responsibility for atrocities. I hope the * administration is paying attention; a bench at the Hague awaits.

2. Except for Tracy and Dietrich |
|
It was horribly overacted. Judy Garland was embarrassing. The message of the movie was excellent, but only Tracy and Deitrich saved it from being a bunch of cr*p.
