Soldiers tricked out of their promised scholarships, recruiters' lies
DON'T BELIEVE THE RECRUITERS AND ADS THAT SAY YOU WILL GET SCHOLARSHIPS FOR JOINING UP. TODAY, THEY'LL LIKELY TRICK YOU OUT OF IT BY THE TIME YOU GO AND KEEP THE $$ YOU PUT INTO THE SYSTEM!

With an all-volunteer military, promises are a primary lure for keeping troop levels up. The U.S. Army's website offers enlistment bonuses "up to $20,000"; their PaYS (Partnership for Youth Success) program promises "priority consideration by companies ... including Fortune 500 corporations" for post-military employment. "College money" is commonly cited as motivation for joining. Details are absent and the Army's website refers all questions to "your local recruiter."

Vietnam-era conscientious objector Don Olson explained one college program called the Montgomery bill.

"You put $100 a month your first year in the military into an Advanced Education Fund and they say you'll get up to $40,000. Usually, it works out to be $6,000 or less," he says. "The government actually makes money off this deal because many don't make use of it or only get small amounts. Anything less than honorable discharge, you lose the money."

"I know a Marine who complained about taking six Anthrax shots at the end of his enlistment," Wolf said. "There was no reason for him to take them. He was leaving! They labeled him a troublemaker. He got a less-than-honorable discharge and they denied his education. Nothing is guaranteed."

1. Another tricky catch...
There are different levels of educational assistance. According to a woman I know who has children acquiring scholarships in the Air Force, her child is getting a full ride. She's a little snooty, too. I distinctly got the impression that Air Force cadets are treated better than any other branch of the military. Guess which branch has the least number of minorities?
