Poll question: How do you classify yourself politically?
For me things have changed as I have gotten older. I have grown to see America in a much different light than I did when I was younger. I am an American first and a democrat second. But it was not always that way. Once upon a time I was a anti-American to the point I would not say the pledge or place my hand over my heart in the presence of the flag. I love my country now! I believe in the dreams of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. I believe that we are the greatest nation ever founded. I believe that with the continued vision of our people we will not parish from this earth. But we have to be American first. We must understand that we are all Americans first and then we are different in whatever way. We have to continue to dream of this great nation and all that it can be. We can't lose sight of goal. I wonderful, peaceful world where everyone is equal and no one suffers. I love being an American and I love being a democrat. I love that no one can ever take that away from me!!

The fact that I'm American has very little to do with it.

10. What makes America so great?
Is it our penchant for crushing popular movements worldwide, and forcing other countries to bend to our will?

Is it our greed? Our arrogance? Our racism?

Just wondering. What makes us great? Just because we say we are?

15. ...and that is the case in many, many, many...
other countries.

Also, there is something wrong with the idea of being thankful that you won't be killed for speaking your mind. If "freedom" is a "gift from the Almighty", as * likes to echo the Americana style propaganda, then why does the American government constantly implicitly demand grattitude for not taking these gifts away?

6. Human, Progressive, American
There are days when I really feel closer in mindset to Europeans than I do to some of my fellow Americans.

12. When American Policy Conflicts with My Democratic Convinctions,
my convictions come first. In other words, I would not sacrifice my convictions to patriotic loyalty. That's how I interpret the question.

I'm a patriot first and Democrat second. If Bush was leading us into a war that was justified, I would be behind him.

These neo-conservatives would have bowed down to British royalty, while we would have done the fighting for Independence. I want what is right for America, even if it isn't the "American" thing in some eyes.

I agree that this is a great country, and if it would keep its capitalism in check, it would be perfect.

17. I'm not an American
I'm a Scottish/Australian and a citizen of both those countries.

That however is just an accident of birth and a consequence of my parents making a decision I was too young to do anything about. It's nothing to be "proud" of.

Being free to call my elected representatives greedy selfish dipwads is not a reason to "lurv ma country" mine's only one of many in which that is the case, and many other nations have a more equitable distribution of wealth, better standards of healthcare and education and basically a better quality of life.

Being "Australian" or "Scottish" is pretty meaningless, "Australia" particularly has only existed for a couple of hundred years, Scotland has had it's borders drawn and re-drawn hundreds of times over the years and I didn't "choose" to be either anyway.

I did choose to believe in human rights, equality, equitable distribution of wealth, the responsibility for a society to look after those who can not look after themselves, the right of labour to organise etc

Therefore that comes first for me.
