Anybody on TV mention David Stockman yet???
I'm not watching any of this Reagan extravaganza.....but I'm wondering if the name David Stockman has come up at all?

You know, the David Stockman who left the reservation and wrote about how Reagan et all planned to bankrupt the country so they could cut social programs?? They guy who was taken "to the woodshed"?

I know he wrote an article about all this......would be great if we could find it and pass it around..................Did he write a book, too? I don't remember...

but he did, as you say, go "off the reservation". I remember him saying something about trickle down economics being nothing more than an excuse to give your rich friends a tax break. For that, he was indeed "taken to the woodshed".

edited for clarity.

He was a big player in the Reagan adminstration until he was "taken to the woodshed"?

3. I think I heard the name.....
on the radio this afternoon, around 4:30.....

it was either on NPR (I doubt it) or Randi Rhodes, but at the moment I just had the radio on in the background and wasn't paying much attention.....

Not sure about TV, I've tried to avoid the lovefests so far.....

4. IIRC
the Stockman interview quoting himself as telling Reagan that the results of his policies would be "deficits as far as the eye can see" was in the Atlantic Monthly, perhaps Harpers, in the early '80s (pre internet). If I find a minute, I'll look around for it; shouldn't be too hard to find.

I found this to be very, very timely with the diefication of Reagan that is going on.

First when Bill Greider published the story The Education of David Stockman (Bill Greider, The Atlantic, December 1981) and then when this memoir came out, Reaganites, supply-side ideologues, gleeful Democrats and the Press focussed mainly on the palpable sense of betrayal conveyed by the insider accounts of budgeteering in the Reagan Administration. David Stockman's angst ridden confessions were read mainly as an admission that the whole Reagan economic program had been a knowing hoax, which even it's architects knew to be unworkable. This is indeed a part of the tale and folks will be arguing about the accuracy of this thesis for years to come. Democrats and Republicans have such a vested interest in the debate that it seems unlikely that these discussions can ever produce much of a consensus. Your view of it's truth or falsity is likely to be inextricably tied up in your political allegiance, so there's little point in trying to change anyone's mind at this late date.
