Ashcroft refuses to give Congress torture memo

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Attorney General refused to give lawmakers copies of a Justice Department (news - web sites) memo that allegedly advised the White House that torture during 'war on terror' interrogations could be justified.

The Washington Post said an August 2002 memo sent by the Justice Department in response to a Central Intelligence Agency (news - web sites) request for legal guidance said international laws against torture "may be unconstitutional if applied to interrogations" conducted in the war on terrorism.

1. Biden was wonderful today, from what I've seen.

"We believe that to provide this kind of information would impair the ability of advice-giving in the executive branch to be candid, forthright, thorough and accurate at all times," Ashcroft said.

Biden reminded everyone there that we sign these treaties to protect our own troops from equally bad treatment.

4. Those Ratings are All Over the Place!
The Ashcroft story was 4.6 when I went there. Afterwards, a list of top-rated stories came up and it was 3.9. Assuming it's been freeped.

So I rated some neutral stories a "1" to bring it back up. :spank:

9. Rated.... and WTF?:
Edited on Tue Jun-08-04 01:34 PM by Misunderestimator
"The August 2002 memo, The Washington Post wrote, argued that inflicting moderate or fleeting pain did not necessarily constitute torture, which 'must be equivalent in intensity to the pain accompanying serious physical injury, such as organ failure, impairment of bodily function, or even death.'"

TORTURE can only be called TORTURE if it is equivalent to the intensity of DEATH??? :wtf: Did I read that right? Who ARE these people? ARE these people?
