SEPARATION of CHURCH and STATE...read this and f'n WEEP!
....we've never been able to carry out our forefathers intentions regarding this most necessary RIGHT of our Constitution...after over two centuries...we're fightin' the same ol'battles...never able to learn from history and doomed to keep repeatin' it! :evilfrown:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=548&ncid=703&e=7&u=/ap/20040607/ap_on_el_ge/church_politics

And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerve in the brain of Jupiter. But may we hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away with this artificial scaffolding, and restore to us the primitive and genuine doctrines of this most venerated reformer of human errors.

-Thomas Jefferson, Letter to John Adams, April 11, 1823

2. "Pray for our President" ... huge bill board on church in our town
they took that off after a day or two. Did they violate the law?

<snip>
The Internal Revenue Service (news - web sites) prohibits political campaign activity, for or against any candidate, from taking place at all organizations that receive tax exempt status under a section of the federal tax code — including most churches and religious groups. Violators could lose their tax breaks and face excise taxes.
<snip>

I'll be paying more attention to that. How do you report violations like that?

13. I doubt any laws or rules were broken ~ Our President is pretty generic
If they would have said Pray for GW Bush* it might be said to be politicizing. And a church certainly has an American right to suggest prayer for our government leaders and our country as a whole. Even if that message had been posted in a school or government building it is just to generic. It doesn't say pray to Jesus or Pray to Allah or Pray to God so it isn't advocating for any religion.

3. it's really hard to believe we're living in America
I just read the article and it's yet another disgusting dismantling of one of our constitutional tenets as Americans.

Well, then again I do recall that we were only 300 years behind the rest of the world in abolishing human slavery . . . this is just par for the course.

9. Thanks for the link
I'm always looking for facts to throw back at the fundies that keep trying to tell me this is a Christian nation. Last I checked it was supposed to be a Democracy, not a Theocracy.

6. This administration is pretty good at "giving legal cover"like Abu Ghraib
Legal cover is just another way of saying "piss on the Constitution." We have an activist Court, and activist Executive and now an activist Congress who would busy themselves with thwarting the very essence of the American Consitution and they are doing it successfully.

16. why oh why do they never get called on shit like this?
>Campaign officials said Monday they were unaware of the church provision. But spokesman Steve Schmidt accused Lynn of "an extreme position — he wants to exclude people of faith from America's civic life."

"Not only is that misguided, it's dangerous," Schmidt said. "You don't want to exclude people from the electoral process, from the democratic process. You want to include people."

"People of faith have as much right to participate in the political process as anyone else," Schmidt said. <

this is the most ridiculous line of reasoning and when are idiots like this going to be held accountable for their disingenuousness? frankly i have had it up to my hairline listening to people whine about the poor downtrodden xtian so-called minority.
